valve spring shim question

well i messed up and forgot to shim my springs to the proper installed height before putting in new valve seals...with the seals in, i can not remove the lower spring cup to put shims under the cup...Is it ok for shims to be "in" the cup and just under the valve spring? My shims ID will allow them to go over my seals without removing..Im afraid that ill ruin the new seals if i remove them and i dont want to deal with that..

Re: valve spring shim question

I see no one has replied, so I'll suggest calling the maker of the cups. Or maybe Summit.

I have zero direct experience with them, except that I *almost* used them once. I wound up going with a different set of heads and spring setup.

I'll share my opinion anyway; at least this will bump your question to the top for a while and give others a chance to weigh in.

It's your engine, and you're the boss, so take these with a grain of salt, but if the helpline isn't helpful then here are some factors to consider:
Does the cup center the spring from the inside or outside?
Often the inner cone of the cup is taller than the outer lip.
How tall is the cone or lip of the cup compared to the height of the shims?
To me if the height of the shim is less than 10-20% of the height of the lip than I might risk it.
Also, the cost of new seals is pretty low compared to the risk of valvetrain failure (I hate valvetrain failures, so that pushes me toward stock setups) and it might give you peace of mind to just take things apart and do it right with new seals.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Tks for the reply...

My cups center via the outside. I am only needing to shim .030 so there is still plenty of cup left for the spring. I ended up talking to a local machine shop and he said that non hardened shims can only go under the cup...But if you buy hardened shims, you can run them in the cup. I ended up buying hardened .030 shims and am running them in the cup. I think ill be fine since there is only one shim per cup and they are hardened shims...

If anyone else has thoughts i love to hear them..

Yes. Those hardened shims inside the cups will be fine.
