Are these products a good idea?

Re: Motor Flush. Good or bad?

My first hand experience...
A friend had an old Mazda, a beater. Had the valve cover off, replaceing V/C gasket. Inside was caked with sludge, black carbon crap. Engine ran fine, in fact quite well. So my buddy thinks he should buy some "motor flush".
All that crap came loose, got on the cyl walls, you could NOT keep oil in that engine afterwards, didn't use a drop before.

DO NOT use an engine flush unless your engine is already a lost cause (for whatever reason...)

Re: Motor Flush. Good or bad?

So these are products that go in the engine oil, versus coolant flush products?

Re: Motor Flush. Good or bad?

Usually all the crud comes off and clogs the oil pick up.

Yes, they make crank case flush also. I believe Gunk made the crank case flush that my buddy used....
It may have some good purpose, but I would never use it...

Re: Motor Flush. Good or bad?

Ive never had a problem. You just have to change the oil right away. Other wise the sludge, if excessive, can clog your filter and thus starve engine of oil. You can also do it slowly and run some high mileage oil with detergents in it and change oil sooner. I also put some seafoam in my oil a few days before I plan to change oil so it assists in cleaning it out. Too much sludge slowing oil flow can burn up piston prematurely.

Re: Motor Flush. Good or bad?

better to pull the oil pan valve covers and intake and physically clean everything. Why take a chance of circulating all that crud thru your engine? The pictures are of a Tractor oil pan. But ive seen a number of engines of all types with similar gunk. I cleaned the sludge and regasketed the tractor engine. Its now back in service running great.
