Re: K30 Downgrade to Cummins Project

Wow, that's a bad deal for some one and good deal for you. Do you plan to use the dmax in anything later?

Re: K30 Downgrade to Cummins Project

Working on making an engine mounting plate for an engine stand I should build. Can one of you guys tell me what the circled dimension is below for these 6bt's? My bellhousing is still on the engine and I can't measure hole to hole spacing on these.

Re: K30 Downgrade to Cummins Project

I can measure that for you tomorrow as I have a couple off engines. I also have a couple of blocks sitting here I could measure off of. Ryanroo might have these measurements saved though.

Re: K30 Downgrade to Cummins Project

No worries, if I could just get the one dimension ASAP I can get this plate in with a batch of stuff going to the lasercutter today. Otherwise I will leave them out and drill them later.

Yep... Nissan will be running it and Toyota will be picking it up a year or two later. I am hoping they do a Cummins Sequoia.

I'm more excited that Nissan is serious about the little 4 cyl. Cummins for the intermediate truck.

Re: K30 Downgrade to Cummins Project

That's a real nice looking pallet Wish I could find a pallet like that.
I also like what you've done with the core support. Are you changing the front fascia to the newer style?

Yep, I need to get to rebuilding whats on it! It came out of the crappiest body truck I've ever had on my property!

Core support was just hacked apart to get the engine out and save the front geometry so I can work on mocking up an intercooler. The core support was jacked at the top and I've got a super nice one to replace it with at some point. Keeping the 86 front end, I think its better looking in my opinion.

Re: K30 Downgrade to Cummins Project

Been working on a engine stand. Modeled it up in solidworks since I don't want to spend any more time than necessary on getting it to work like I want. It also makes analyzing the strength a snap.

I cut all the steel yesterday, just need to weld it together. Thanks to Ryan roo for the inspiration to do a heavy duty stand with an adapter plate. Only thing I need to decide now is if I want to direct couple the gearbox, the downside is it will add a foot to the overall length. Alternative is to do a chain drive but thats more work and not as clean. Here are both versions. What do you guys think? Shop space is at a premium for me.

Re: K30 Downgrade to Cummins Project

are you putting casters on the stand? i would make sure the front side of the stand will work with your engine crane. mine is a little bit of a pain. i have plans to build my own engine crane to work with and stand proud next to frankenstand.

i would direct drive the box. putting a sprocket on it will put a radial load on the shafts, and add a lot of slop to the system. unless it is perfectly balanced, which it cant be as you add or remove parts, it will overcenter and jerk. mine still does it as it takes the lash out of the connections and worm gear, but it is very minor. also, i am curious about the adapter plate to shaft connection. it seems like the bolt pattern is a little small.

what is the material being used for everything? and the spacing on the separated column? it looks really wide. i am interested in the simulated load readings. we never ran mine through the EFA program. but the real world test has proven the design..

as far as shop space, it will eat tons of it. mine is like having a VW in the garage. but it is pretty darn cool! also, the most important question is, what color will it be painted? Pink?

looking forward to more!

Re: K30 Downgrade to Cummins Project

Good point on the backlash. I was going to make this thing collapsible but with my tendency for having stuff sit around , this will probably always have a 350 or 6bt on it. Bolt pattern is 4 inch so its going to put about 4000 lbs tension at most on the top bolts, not much for 1/2 bolts going into 5/8 thick material. I think my engine is bigger than life, its not scaled yet. I have it 40 inches from top of valve cover to bottom of oil pa. 7Inch spacing between uprights could be reduced, 2.5 Square tubing on those, 3inch on Horizontal parts. Unit will get casters but my engine hoist is made by john Deere so no worries there

Does anyone use aandroid for posting on this forum? Setup auto correct is insane to use, how do I turn?off? settings show everything is off andI am about ready to smash something. . this post took 10 minutes extra to type up because of flipping auto corr. t

the JD hoist is a more versatile unit that mine! i doubt the bolts will ever cause issue, i was more thinking the joint where the plate with the bolt holes joins the shaft. if the plate is small the leverage is increased on that joint. diameter of the shaft will be the factor there though so i guess that doesnt matter. the space between the members of the column does seem wide. mine is 3" tube and a 3" space between. it is hell for stout in that area. i would guess you could shorten that a bit and save some overall length.

i considered doing mine modular so i could unbolt the column and attach it to the floor, but i decided like you said, i have enough junk, and the stand is cool enough, it will have something hanging off of it most of the time.

i was just telling Ryan earlier that i would have busted the crap out of my phone a long time ago if i was 5 years younger. i only use them for forum posting if i am away from home, but just texting it corrects so many things stupidly it amazes me.

Yep, I think the plate to "axle" connection needs some small gussets. The plate is 5/8 or 3/4 thick and will have a hole in it but gussets are just cheap insurance.

As for the color, I like your idea of getting creative! Maybe not pink, but I may just spray bomb it graffiti style with all my almost empty cans

Re: K30 Downgrade to Cummins Project

Alright, I scaled the engine, it was way too big in the first concept above.

Below is a shot after doing the engineering on the stand. I just did it with the old fashioned stress and deflection equations (statics and mechanics of materials) since I trust the tried equations more than my ability to set up solidworks simulations with assemblies at this point. I've got parts down but assemblies take more. Also, I don't have fancy geometry, perfect to keep my math skills honed. I put a screenshot of some of the 6 page mathcad worksheet I used to to the computations. I'm lucky to have access to mathcad since it makes iteration a snap, but all this could be done with a simple calculator and paper.

I'm glad I did the math on the main shaft that supports the engine. The 1.875 heavy DOM I wanted to use would have had 80,000 psi in it! Stepping up to a 2.5" Od with pretty much any ID gets me below 36,000 so I don't need to worry.

Better to take a few hours doing the math than be rewelding and adding material in the shop. Or worry about it coming down!

Re: K30 Downgrade to Cummins Project

Called the trans shop about the getrag. Got an estimate, told them nothing is wrong with it, just normal wear and as long as its out, go through it. They said 750 to 1000, what do you guys think of that price? Wondering if I should tackle it myself or if thats a good price....

Re: K30 Downgrade to Cummins Project

It just depends what all they have to put in it. I haven't rebuilt a getrag, but I know ghuys that have rebuilt them in an afternoon. I don't think they're any harder than a NV4500. $750-$1000 isn't bad really. Most trans shops charge $1100 on up for a good quality NV4500 rebuild.

Re: K30 Downgrade to Cummins Project

Yeah, I didn't think it sounded too bad since that includes parts. Did you have a chance to work up engine parts prices? I'm thinking I'll do the work on engine now with my fancy stand and all but still need parts

Re: K30 Downgrade to Cummins Project

As long as I was cutting steel and welding stuff, I built a forklift for my tractor. This is something I've wanted for awhile. Should allow pretty good visibility and places to hang chains on. Just need to finish up wire feed welding it together (everything is tacked now) and get it painted
