Re: Pic Thread: Doodlebugs
When I'm done all my doodlebug pictures maybe I'll get into tractor conversions/adaptations. Or should that wait for another thread? I also really like antique construction and farm equipment. Who doesn't, right?

Re: Pic Thread: Doodlebugs
Here's a bug. A lot of these type came along for use as a poor man's log skidder. They aren't doodlebugs but they are the same type of innovation from a different time

Good stuff Tim.
4x4's. I was gonna ask you why there weren't any 4x4 Doodle bugs, but I figured I'd already asked you too many dumb questions.

Re: Pic Thread: Doodlebugs
Back when Doodlebugs were being built there weren't much of any 4wds around. People got by without it. Figure it wasn't till more recent years you saw much if any 4wd tractors. The idea was to create a tractor with an old car taken out of service. Making use of what was available. Most tractors, in the early years, were only practical to buy for a full on farming operation. You didn't have the lawn tractors till maybe the late-50s, so these fit the bill for a thrifty handy dandy chore boy. At least that's my take on it. I see them as the predecessor of the estate tractors we see now. The fact that conversions were being marketed shows the need was there.
I'm about out of doodlebug pictures. I'll start showing some of these tractor conversions soon

Exactly! A very heavy duty Gator with more utility. I want to build one close to this:

Ok, let's say you have a store-bought tractor but you need crawler power

Re: Pic Thread: Doodlebugs
I bet steering is terrible on that thing, don't these have two independent brakes/pedals for each rear wheel?

Re: Pic Thread: Doodlebugs
Yes, but that's a good point. I wonder how the tracks do for staying on if you steer with brakes
