Missing members

I was over in the Photoshop area of the board and was thinking back at how popular that area used to be.

LONGHAIR came to mind. Hasnt logged in since 10/16

Im sure there are a bunch more that I cant remember that have moved on. Sometimes I think I spend too much time here and vow to "take a break" but I just cant break the habit lol

That may be part of the reason we haven't heard from Andy (Longhornman) for a very long time....

Re: Missing members

Andy got married and had a kid or two and quit cold turkey. I've heard he's still on facebook.

I've "quit" a few times for a week or two, even a couple months at a time when I was super busy with other stuff.

Unfortunately a lot of good people I used to enjoy reading their posts don't hardly post anymore or at all. PanelDeland comes to mind too, although he is active on the FB page, I just can't enjoy that because of all the scrolling and notifications i get if I like or comment on a post.

Re: Missing members

The strange thing is you feel like you build a friendship or connection with certain members, but outside of the forum topic you don't really know too much about them. This becomes most evident when they stop posting and you have no idea why and no way to find out. Some just lose interest slowly and some just stop posting abruptly for a variety of reasons. I've noticed that there are quite a few members who either no longer have a ride relevant to the board, or they gain some celebrity status and move to more instant gratification outlets like Facebook and Instagram.

Re: Missing members

Instagram confuses me... I had like 136 people like one of my pics, most of which I didn't know. I guess it's public once I post it, but I don't know how other people see it, I didn't tag it or anything.

Yeah, I occasionally have a post that will get a bunch of likes from people I don't know. If you go to the search page but don't search for something, you can "explore" by scrolling through posts that Instagram targets for you based on your search and like history, even if those posts aren't tagged. The more likes a photo gets, the more likely it is to show up on others' explore page, which is how some photos seem to take on a life of their own and rack up likes. There are also a ton of fake foreign accounts that like posts that have gained a lot of likes and usually end up following you. If you go to the account, it just advertises how to purchase likes.

Re: Missing members

All those people who have "moved on" to other social media once loved this place. None of that stuff offers anything this place doesn't. Or as much if you ask me. This site is laid out nice and easy to use. You can find something if you look for it. The only thing about this site I don't like is having people I was friends with disappear to go with the next thing. Other than research, buying, and e-mail, this place gets all my internet time.

I'd noticed Longhair missing, then see him later. He's been in and out for while. But October is a long time back. I think of members I haven't seen for a while from time to time. Check out some of your old threads in you profile or click a page way back in 67-72 message board. I think that has the oldest threads. You'll be reminded of all kinds of members you might have forgotten about.

How about Ellen, ETsC10? I have thought about not seeing her before

One of my most favoritist signature line quotes is from LONGHAIR... Wish he was back.

I took a hiatus awhile back too when I back burnered my truck rebuild. It happens. Now that I am actively wrenching on my truck again, I'm more active on here.

Re: Missing members

I had forgotten I was quite active on a Camaro and S10 forums years ago. I desperately wanted a new Camaro when they came out and the site had a very good "general discussion" forum, and they had a ton of inside info a couple years before the car was even slated to come out, but when I lost my good job in 2008 I lost my ability to even think about buying one and by the time I could quite a few years later, I needed a new pickup more. I haven't logged onto that site since probably 2010/11

Another was an S10 forum I really enjoyed. I owned my little 99 S10 for about 5 years before I sold it to buy my 65 Mustang. I haven't logged into that site since probably 2012. Makes me wonder if anyone wonders where I went?

I also frequent a vintage mustang forum, but sometimes I might go for a month or three without logging in/posting since my car is pretty much done.

Re: Missing members

The reason I posted after being away for 2 plus years is that members are more and more starting to give careless or misleading answers to people on subjects that they obviously don't know anything about. After seeing that happen repeatedly for months I decided to reset my password and log in again to try and set things back on the path for a while.

I have a mindset. If I answer your question, I have done it myself and can personally assure the accuracy of my answer, often with pictures that I took myself. If I don't know about the subject at hand I just read and go on without saying anything.

What you get though, is anonymous internet members giving wrong answers and causing the person needing help to be misled. Why should they care, they are just a screen name on the internet ? If I gave a bad answer and some poor bastard spent time and effort and money based on my bogus answer I would absolutely lose sleep at night. Apparently a lot of newer members don't carry the same sense of responsibility. I have literally met 75-100 members from here in real life. How am I gonna look those guys in the eyes if I pass along guesses rather than facts ? I am not anonymous. You can find me at any Decatur or Pate swap meet. If I steer you wrong, come see me at a swap meet and tell me about it. People will know where I'm at and point you in the direction. I will do right by you. I genuinely do give a damn about guys scraping and scrimping to build trucks. If you need my help, I will tilt the earth off it's axis to help you. I'm socially awkward in real life, but I will help you build trucks if you get past the initial awkwardness.

I'll keep posting on here to help when I can, but my bullsh1t filter is pretty much non existent anymore, so I'm sure the mods will make my current stay a short one. I will point out inaccuracies and if it seems the poster was nonchalant in giving the bad info out, I will call it like I see it.

Not trying unduly to be a dick, but people deserve level best efforts at getting their answers and help. Facebook is for off handed guesses. Half them bastards can't tell the difference between an EGR valve and a master cylinder but that damn sure doesn't stop them from spouting off guesses and incorrect facts. I ain't got time for that sh1t, all I care about is building trucks.

Re: Missing members

There's more to my life than trucks. This is my internet place for trucks and my buddies through trucks as well as truck friends in my area. I don't do FB much at all, but what it is for me is the internet place to keep up with family and lifelong friends.

Whatever the reason, welcome back!

I can't stand the Facebook page for that reason. I've given what I know to be 100% right answers to questions and I'll have some random asshat either question it or flat out tell me I'm wrong. I don't need that. I don't even read it anymore.
