72 C20 paint color

Does anyone know if this looks like the original color?

I was told it was re-painted the original color 4 years ago.

It's a two tone, lighter blue on the cab top.

The build sheet says, "dark blue / medium blue" or something like that. So it appears it was two tone from the factory but I don't know which areas were two toned.

I'm just curious incase I ever need to touch up or repaint down the road.

Thanks!

From a distance it looks like the main body is not an original color...I may be wrong, but it is not immediately familiar to me.
Also, from a distance it looks like the roof might be the original (slightly lighter/creamier) blue.
Lets see what the other guys say.
Do you have a pic of the SPID (build) sheet in the glovebox that shows the options, equipment and the paint codes? If so, maybe post it up and the guys can go from there.
All Good

Re: 72 C20 paint color

Hard to tell, but I am gonna lean toward a correct color repaint, even though my initial impression was the same as Coley's. Here's a pic of a 523 dk blue truck - keep in mind 523 is just the solid color code - 559 is for your lt over dk blue combo. Dark Blue wasn't exactly "dark" in 72. Always liked the color personally.

Do you think your SPID is original? If so, you can kinda tell the ORIGINAL paint color under the clear seal label that overlaps the SPID in 72. Looks correct to me - but can't tell if the whole thing was stripped and a new SPID/clear sheet installed after the inside of the glovebox was painted. I'm gonna lean toward correct color, but it sure is so hard to tell in pics alone.

Btw, that is a gorgeous truck. Looks like someone went to a lot of trouble to resto it correctly, and that's another reason I'd lean toward correctness on the paint. Not a guarantee, but usually if someone redoes one and replaces the SPID, etc, they add a ton of options and, usually, add in the YE9 to make it a Cheyenne Super while they are at it. Yours is "just" a Cheyenne, next to the top of the line - I'm really gonna lean toward thinking this one is restored correctly, and wow, what a great job they did, so glad that, if this is the case, that they chose to resto it as it was when it left the factory and not change it. There's absolutely NOTHING wrong with doing that, mind you, it's personal choice, but I love to see when these old trucks get redone just as they originally were. I'm guilty of adding on too, so certainly not saying anything negative about it, it's just a personal choice. Just love seeing a full resto without any fluff on occasion.

Have you found a build sheet under or behind the seat? Really nice truck, thanks for sharing the pics. Interesting that so much detail was spent restoring the truck and then adding aftermarket wheels and sport mirrors vice the original . Yours look great on there, by the way, but I'm a plain white steelie with PO3 cap fanatic. Wow oh wow do I think stock steelies would look awesome on there.... Ha. LOVE this truck - definitely saving a few reference pics for the color combo! Would love to hear others' opinions on whether or not this is a true dk blue truck - I think it is, but it is a little hard to tell sometimes.

EDIT: the more I stare at this gorgeous truck - the more I think the SPID may be a reprint. The one minor odd thing I notice is that it still lists the DG4 camper mirrors (the big mamas) and has had the sport mirrors installed - which is a common change people tend to make because they don't like the big mirrors or the vibe associated with them, but I noticed the distinct lack of PO3 wheel covers on the SPID(?) That is what would have come on a Cheyenne 20 and I've never actually seen them left off a SPID. Very interesting truck! Would love to know the full history of it.

Re: 72 C20 paint color

Looks correct to me. Remember that in some cases a base coat/clear coat can look a little different than a single stage job. The truck is beautiful. Agree with Jocko that missing all of the popular add-ons would tend to make me believe that the resto was done back to original with the exception of the mirrors. I had a Longhorn with the dark blue over med blue. Your combo is much better looking.

Re: 72 C20 paint color

Thanks guys for all the compliments on the truck!

I think I got a good deal on it.

I was told that the interior was left original and never painted since the original paint.

The SPID I think is original too

I've attached some pics of the doorsill area, dash and engine bay

Re: 72 C20 paint color

That scheme looks correct for a 559 truck. Don't see those as often as a 558 and most of the time either of these Custom Two-Tones are painted over solid.
As far as the body color being an absolute match its hard to say on a computer screen.
Overall it presents well and might be slightly light but I would not worry about it.
If you decide you can't live with it PM for my shipping address! :-)

Someone mentioned a great point to me - the Cheyenne came standard with white caps, not Chrome PO3s, so PO3 would only be listed if the orig owner ordered them - so your truck likely had the standard white 12" caps. Good catch!

Re: 72 C20 paint color

That's the exact colors of the 1971 K20 my dad bought brand new. Lighter blue on the cab roof.

Looks correct to me.

Re: 72 C20 paint color

Looks just like the '72 my friend had in high school with factory paint.
