engine harness
hi, just got a 65swb and am trying to figure out the eng harness. The PO had only 2 wires on the starter, purple to the S terminal on the solenoid, and of course the batt to the battery. I have a new harness, and it has 4 wires to the starter, 2 to the R term, and one to the S term, and a black one to the batt stud. will I have a problem hooking them up as shown ? The PO has changed alot in the engine bay, don't know if it was a 6cyl orig, but it now has a sb chevy in it.Thanks

Re: engine harness
okay one wire should be a resister wire run from the r terminal to the points and the other i dont know where it goes, should be 2 wires on the big post the battery wire and a wire from the alternator, s terminal should have have one wire as the signal wire

Quote:
The yellow wire carries the resistance to the coil for normal running except when the starter is engaged, the R terminal then gets a full 12 volts from the starter circuit which goes to the ignition coil for easier starting. The purple wire goes to the S terminal on the solenoid and the large cable goes to the large stud on the solenoid. The ballast resistor serves the same purpose as the resistance wire and one side of it should be wired to the ignition switch and the other side will have two wires connected together one goes to R and one goes to the coil plus. If the PO has the resistance wire from the key running to the ballast resistor then he is getting double resistance and the engine may not start or will have a weak spark. Here is a ballast resistor circled in red. It shows two wires so there might be a separate wire going from the R terminal to the coil positive. Your PO might also have this setup.
