basecoat issue - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

This isn't on my truck but I'm painting a project car with bc/cc. I painted my C10 last with same process w/o any major issues. The problem I have is the basecoat looks splotchy/hazy/didn't cover 400 scratches. I took a bumper to the paint shop and they suggested I 600 grit the bumper and spray one coat. I did and the results are the same. Anyone see this before to give me some pointers? The basecoat is over high build primer sanded at 400. Everything is per the tech sheet of the paint. Thx

Omni is a low hide paint system and needs more coats to cover. All paint companies offer two lines. A low end poor hide and a premium line that is high hide.
There's no such thing as a good, cheap paint.

I thought this was a mid grade paint system. I've used it in the past with better results. The picture is 4 coats. It almost seems like more a reaction than not enough paint. I'm a hobbyist painter though so don't really know. I'll check with the paint shop for a better option.

I am not a pro but I always shoot sealer over high build. You don't have to but I have had issues with bleed through in the past. My thoughts, don't take em to the bank!

Ask them when you're there what the hide factor is for the color you chose. I'll bet they will tell you that specific color is low hide according to their formula retrieval software. They don't like to tell customers this information when buying the paint because it's a difficult conversation to have... Some Omni (and competitive second tier paints) colors will hide better than others, and they know this.

Thanks for the input. I also sealed the other cars I painted but they talked me out of it when I bought the product.

was the hood one solid color of primer or was it different layers? I dont always seal my primer, was told as long as I didnt have any sand thru I was ok to spray right over the high build.
