Is there some kind of adapter I need? It seems like when the wheel is slid on far enough that the splines grab and the nut will thread on that the wheel is sunk down in the column as it is smaller in dismater than the column is. When this happens it rubs and doesn’t seem to steer very well.

Re: 61 impala wheel in 69 c10

I guess it doesn't fit so well. I have swapped all sorts of GM car steering wheels in these trucks and they always fit. My impression has been and wheel works since whenever the shaft/spline went to the diameter/spline count they had. I never did a '61 wheel, though. I think I have heard of some modification needed for some wheels. Maybe the column gets trimmed? I know some don't cover the column well.

It would slide inside the column as is, do you know if there is any kind of adapter?

Re: 61 impala wheel in 69 c10

I have seen it done but I'm not aware of any mods they had to do.

Re: 61 impala wheel in 69 c10

you might be able to loosen the bottom bearing retainer and move the shaft up a little

I don't know of any adapter. Do you have a tilt column or standard? You might be able to swap the upper column pieces from the car.

Re: 61 impala wheel in 69 c10

'61 wheel must be different than the '60 I installed several years ago. I remember collapsing the column under the hood to gain a little "belly room". I don't remember any adapter... just the turn signal canceling piece under the wheel.

Re: 61 impala wheel in 69 c10

Sounds nice, all the goodies. '61 is my favorite Impala and gotta have that four on the floor. My little '67 SWB is getting a '67 Impala N30 option steering wheel with customized horn button w/ '67 GMC Super Custom center.

Re: 61 impala wheel in 69 c10

I thought I’d update you all, I did some adjustment to the shaft as someone had suggested above and I managed to get just enough adjustment that the steering wheel is now solidly splined on and working wonderfully!
