Exhaust System going in on the 64 Shortwide

I just went down to the shop where the guy is putting in the muffler system. This guys is doing a great job. He has it done from the Shorty Collectors to the mufflers. When he calls me to pick it up I am going to ask him to keep it up on the rack so I can take some pictures. I will post them tonight. Its going to be great not hearing the clanging from the Trac Bar Perch hitting the tail pipe and the drive shaft scraping on the mufflers. Im looking forward to hearing how loud these Thrush mufflers are going to be. Looks like its going to be tomorrow, The Stainless Tips didn't show up.

This thing sounds great. No resonance hum at speed and a mean rumble at Idle. These Thrush Mufflers are great for the price.

Very nice! That's just about how I did my exhaust, particularly the down pipe from the collector around to the outside of the frame...

vin63,
This is the first one I have had done to the outside of the frame rail and I really like how it looks and how its tucked up where you cant see it. Going down the middle of the truck you have to go under the Trans Mount and from a distance you can see it hanging low. Thats why I like this way better. Thanks for the compliment.

Yep, I've done a few for friends and customers who went to larger diameter tubing for their exhaust. For my truck, it was the only way to fit a 3-inch diameter exhaust and tuck it out of the way.

Here are a few more photos of passenger side just before I finished welding everything...

likaroc13,
My older Son is coming over this weekend to work on his 69 Long Fleet and I am going to have him make a sound clip for it then I will post it. This thing sounds like a million bucks. I really like the fact that it settles down at highway speeds. It has great rumble at idle and when you get in it, it barks but when you get out of it settles right down to a nice tone.

vin63,
Are you running a big block? 3 inches is a butt load of flow! That is one great looking exhaust system, Nice Work. One other thing this guy did was he ran the exhaust inside the flange on the Shorty Headers so there would be no chance of the lower flange blowing out on me. This takes all the pressure off the connection where the pipe and the header hooks together. I was talking with my Wife about getting a pipe bender and some flare tools so I could do this myself but Im not sure that doing 5 trucks constitutes buying a $2K to $3K tool. Im sure I would gather a lot more friends if I had one though. I think I would rather spend some money on a Plasma cutter to help out with the panel replacements.

Nice. When I took my truck in the muffler tech insisted I not run it that way cuz of the heat transferring to the floor possibly causing a fire. Like a dummy I listened to him now my exaust drags in and out of driveways!

My Pontiac came out to 462 cubic inches, and I had a bunch of 3-inch exhaust tubing and J-bends laying around from previous jobs, so I did some pie-cuts and welding, and ended up not needing to make any bends...just a swage for the slip-fit. I would rather buy a plasma cutter, too.

Re: Exhaust System going in on the 64 Shortwide

My exhaust is down the middle and above the trans x-member. X-member is aftermarket so I dont know if it's possible with stock components. No part of the exhaust is below the frame until it turns out at the rear wheel opening. It's definitely possible to do.

I like both of these systems. It's a good use of the clearance in the frame up front.

You have to cut holes in the stock crossmember, I just had to do mine that way. I have the thrush welded series mufflers too and they sound great.

Nice! I was woundering about running a 3" pipe down the outside. Now that i know it's possible, I just need to build the rest of the truck...

Rhoff2009,
I talked with the guy that did my Exhaust about that option. Call me crazy but I have this thing about cutting holes in metal that was designed to support the frame. Im not saying that anything would happen to the truck because you cut the holes in the cross support but its just a personal preference of not cutting holes in cross members. I too was completely satisfied with the sound that the THRUSH Mufflers make. I am going to post a sound bite this weekend when my Son comes over on Saturday. Im a little Technology Challenged.

Re: Exhaust System going in on the 64 Shortwide

Nice I had my exaust on my old truck run down the center and this one I want to run outside the frame just like that only I cant go all the way out the back so am turning out before tires. I am curious as to sound of thrush mufflers.

that sounds good...in person, does the sound resemble any other brands, or does it have a sound of its own?

likaroc13,
Its a little hard to explain. This exhaust has a higher tone than most Ive heard. Not tinny but its almost like you can hear each detonation in the cylinders unlike most kind of melt together. I really like the way this thing sounds. Its not real loud when you get it up to speed and when its idleing its has a great sound. I was told that they are similar to the 40 Series of the Flowmasters but I dont think they sound anything like the Flowmasters. I think these are more quiet than the Flowmasters. The sound clip is ok but I dont think it really represents the actual sound.

Is it an optical illusion or are the tips smaller than the rest of the exhaust?
What size tubing did you use?

Slow Build,
Its 2 inch. This is not a real heavy breathing 327, its the small journal 69 275 HP model but with the upgrades its probably just over 300 Ponies. Tip do look pretty small coming out the back.
