Wrecked 04 2500 value?

I'm looking to swap an LS into my '73, and a friend told me this
Quote:
I have a wrecked 2004 at work with a 6.0 and (I'm assuming but haven't actually checked) a 4L80E. It's a front end wreck, so the radiator and A/C condenser are no good, but the engine and trans are fine. Not sure how we are going to dispose of it yet, since it's a public agency and there are some rules, but if you're not in a huge hurry...
If the engine itself doesn't have any damage, what's a reasonable price for the truck? I'd have to figure out what to do with the rest of it, but there are certainly advantages to starting with the whole thing.

Depending on condition I figure I could probably sell off the rear end (or swap it in place of my 14FF), sell off the bed, either sell off the cab or scrap it, and use everything I need. I need a new radiator, but that's not too expensive.

So, what's a reasonable price for it?

Re: Wrecked 04 2500 value?

I've seen wrecked 2500s on CL from about $2500 up to $5-$6000 here close to Houston. Is it a 2WD or 4WD truck?

It's 2WD. I could easily get a high mileage truck in reasonable shape for 5-6...

Re: Wrecked 04 2500 value?

I just went through this with a 2004 2500 HD.
It wasn't wrecked but the tranny was weak. I thought "no biggie" on the tranny as I'm going to rebuild it anyway.

I pulled the motor, tranny, ecm and wiring harness. I tried to sell the 14B ff rear end on CL's with no bites.

I eventually sold the diesel transfer tank and pump, and the plumbers rack. Once all that was stripped the salvage yards would offer me $300-$400 for the truck. Full rolling chassis with working AC components and all.

I paid $1000 for a 182K running truck. I took what I wanted sold the rest for $800, but I didn't take the time to part the truck out. If I would have, I would have easily made money.

The only thing I regret not pulling is the hydroboost system.

By time I get done with having the lower end of the motor and the tranny rebuilt, I figure I'll be in a fresh motor/trans(4L80e) with everything to go with it for around $2000-$3000 including 243 heads/ intake and cam to match.

IMHO, that's pretty cheap for a reliable 400HP+ motor/trans.

Re: Wrecked 04 2500 value?

Apparently the truck has well 100k on it, but a dead battery so he can't check right now. It was government owned, so hopefully maintenance was reasonable.

Looks like it wasn't wrecked as badly as I'd been thinking:

He still doesn't know what he'd be able to sell it for, and is looking into that. The toolboxes are being removed but the rack will likely stay. When I'm done with it I'll probably spent a week selling easy parts and then take the rest to a junkyard.

I don't know the rules in California but, at my workplace, everything is disposed of via auction.

Re: Wrecked 04 2500 value?

It sounds like it's getting auctioned, yes. What's a reasonable price to pay?

Re: Wrecked 04 2500 value?

I build wrecks. Of course I buy my stuff at auction and it is a nation wide chain for insurance disposal. First let me say keep the rack if you have room take it off the truck and put some casters on the stands where it attached to the bed. It makes for a great bed stand to hold your bed during your rebuild and other stuff as well. Now back to the truck I think it will probably be too high to buy for drive train stuff for a swap unless nobody else bids on it. I see that truck going in the $2250 to $3000 range. I know that is not what you want to hear but there are a lot of guy out there that do rebuilt those trucks and there is a lot of truck left on the table there to junk.
I will give you another hint you were saying about the 6.0 but have not checked it yet, the only time you have to even look to see if it is a 6.0 in the 3/4 ton other than the 8.1 of course [you know were talking LS family here] is the model year 1999. That year you could order a 5.3 in the 3/4 ton with a 4l60E transmission. I would not have believed it if I had not have had one in my shop floor to see for my self. Also if you do see a 99 6.0 you really don't want that year of 6.0, they had steel heads and they were not as good of motors as the newer 6.0's are of course you could do a head swap but that is more $$$ that you can avoid spending just by keep shopping a little longer. Also if you find a 4L80 E and you think you just want to send it out to have it freshened up be forewarned it is quite a bit higher than the 60's it can run up to 3 grand just to freshen one up as apposed to 1000 bucks or so for a 4 L60E . Just a few thing to think about I have more than my share of these like I said I rebuild these from wrecked this is my main gig and has been in my shop since I've had it in the late 80's. good luck to you if you have any questions I might could help with I would be glad just PM me I don't hang out here this is my first time through here so a PM would be best.
