1972 Cheyenne - Finally Pulled the Trigger

After lurking about here for several months, learning a bunch about these trucks from members and looking at about a dozen different trucks I finally pulled the trigger and bought a 1972 Cheyenne C10 this week. I stumbled across it on the web at a dealership in Hattiesburg Mississippi. I flew down on Tuesday and the truck was way better in person than the pictures or description from Dean the salesman. Many of the trucks I looked at before had some issue or another that I couldn't get past and folks wanted crazy money for trucks with rust issues, cut down long beds, and so on.
This a legit 1972 Cheyenne C10 with SPID, matching cab VIN and frame VIN. Nearly rust free its been restored sometime in the recent past and whoever did the work knew their business. They did put a little mustard on it with the Super upgrades, badges, woodgrain dash and houndstooth seats. But other than that, and little lowering its restored pretty close to original.
Drove it back to Denver from Hattiesburg over a two day run and it ran like a champ, super tight and a great ride. Averaged 16 mpg doing 75 mph @ 3200 rpm.
Does have a few things to sort out so I'll be looking for help here on the forum with some of those. The short list includes:
1. Speedo runs out about 15 mph over actual
2. AC runs great but couldn't get the heat to work. Think the cables are sticking. That was fine when I left MS and it was 90 degrees but a PITA when I got to Colorado and it was 38
3. Not sure I love the Cragars....maybe go old school with some Rallys....but the Cragars and tires look brand new
4. Drove through some rain and the windshield wipers work but squeak like mad

Other than that just drive and enjoy.

Thanks again to the members out there who share their knowledge. It really helped me evaluate trucks, avoid buying somebody's mess and get a great little truck. Here are some pics.

Re: 1972 Cheyenne - Finally Pulled the Trigger

Wow. That's a tight looking ride right there. Those little quirks about it are just character marks. Signs of a 40+ year old truck.
Enjoy the ride my friend.
I'm in agreement about those newer Cragar wheels. I'd rather see the truck rallys on it and maybe a slight drop.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Looks like your homework paid off. That is one sweet truck.

I like the Cragars, but I'm biased I love Cragars on just about anything, and I think they look really good on the truck.

Nice score.

Awesome truck! I love the Cragar rims, they set it off from all the trucks that have rallys on them. They achieve that old school period correct classy look. I do like rally rims on trucks but the first thing I noticed before I read a thing was how nice the rims are on your truck...

Beautiful truck, and an Atlanta built truck at that! Looks like someone put a manual shutoff valve in line on the heater hoses. I bet if you open that valve the heater works:-)

Good looking truck! I hope to see it driving around locally.

X2 on the manual heat valve. The factory valve is vacuum operated, its worth having here since you never know what the weather can do in the course of a day or drive to the mountains.

Jessemthompson
Thanks for the comments.....at this point don't really plan to do anything other than enjoy the truck as it sits. I think it only has about 2000 miles on it since it was rebuilt/restored. Hey I was out your way near Raeford in Sanford, NC to look at a truck about three months ago. It was the mac daddy....72 GMC Sierra Grande short bed with bucket seats and a big block. The real deal but it was a project with a Capital P and had more rust than Kelloggs has Cornflakes.

Re: 1972 Cheyenne - Finally Pulled the Trigger

So I spent about two hours going through the truck today from end to end. As a bonus it looks to be numbers matching with the engine, carburetor, and transmission all being correct for 72. Can't tell what ratio rear end it has from any casting numbers so may have to pull the cover or jack it up and turn the rear wheels over to check. Also needs a little carb adjustment as here in Denver it wants to choke off when stopped in gear. Idles fine, runs fine once you get going. Didn't do that in MS. Thanks to engineer_gregh for pointing out that manual shut off valve....heater works better with that in the open position:>)

Nice one. Has that southern style to it. The Cragars would be perfect old school period correct if they were the proper diameter...15". They look alright bigger, but a completely different animal in my eyes. Bigger diameter is new school, period. Have you put new blades on the wipers? That'll solve the squeekies. They must be really old, like a whole year

I was going to say the same thing. I love Cragars, but these are off because of the size. Too many wheel and tire combos out there to go through them all, but I do like the Rally idea. Little more side wall, maybe lowered a smidge to fill up the wheel well a little.

My wipers squeak once in a while. Brand new blades didn't cure it. Its something with the motor or cables. My blower motor on my heater also squeals sometimes. These old trucks always have a little irritant here and there. Work your way through them one at time.
