Which Dana?

Just picked up a 67 GMC swb stepper and it looks like a Dana for the rear. Would it most likely be the 44 version? Looking at the rear cover, the 44 and 60 look almost identical. I'm wanting to do an axle flip, but want to make sure I'm going to keep the rear that's in it. If it's a 44, I may swap it out for a 12 bolt.

Not at the moment. Just doing a quick phone internet search while looking underneath the truck and looks like the Dana 10 bolt for sure. Being a base truck with an inline 6 3ott I'm thinking it's a 44. But the springs are the 5 leaf with a helper, so could this be a heavy half? No SPID on the glove box door to check.

Re: Which Dana?

as Mongo pointed out, the Dana series will be cast in the case..

and if you're lucky, the ratio tag and limited slip lube tag [if equipped] will be present on cover..

if it's difficult to access or clean well enough to see it, you can measure the cover..

digital phone camera perspective is deceiving, but these are rough measurements;

D44 case model

D44 cover height approx 10" [illustrated as width in chart above]

D44 cover width approx. 9"

D60 case model

D60 cover height approx. 12" [illustrated as width in chart above]

D60 cover width approx. 11"

good luck!

Re: Which Dana?

It's a 44. And yes, it still has the ratio tag. 3:73. This truck has been untouched since new seems like. With only 86k on the ticker, I'm not surprised. Means a lot of new parts though before I start driving it much starting with the brakes, which are awful right now.

Re: Which Dana?

Another way to tell, 44 uses a 1/2” wrench to get bolts off, whereas a 60 uses 9/16”. But when you compare the two, it’s a pretty big difference size wise.

Which unit? Tracklok or Powerlok? T/L looks like an open diff, but look inside and can see the clutches. P/L is a 2 piece case....always a good find!!

Re: Which Dana?

How did you determine it has posi-traction?

My 68 is a stock 250 with three speed column shift and stock Dana 44 with 3.54 gears. I don't know of any six cylinder trucks that came with a posi-traction unless it was specially ordered - which you could do in those days.

Either way, if it does have a posi that's a good find. I wouldn't be too quick to swap the rear axle yet.

A quick rev and clutch dump in my driveway left a couple little black marks, LOL.

Oh, I'm keeping the little Dana now.
