Cummins 6BT Power
I'm buying a motorhome with a Cummins 6BT engine (1997). It's rated at 190 HP and 405 ft/lbs. I'm concerned with pulling mountain passes in Utah and Wyoming, but I've read it's pretty easy to get more power by changing the fuel plate and AFC spring. I'm interested in simple and inexpensive; I don't really want to replace the turbo or anything like that.
Anyone here have experience with this? This will be my first diesel, but I can build gasoline engines all day long, so turning wrenches doesn't scare me. If it makes a difference, it's a 36' Freightliner chassis rated at 21000 GVW and running an Allison 5 speed automatic. Thanks for your help.

Re: Cummins 6BT Power
Its not the same pump as a truck, so can't do as much. But you can put a fuel plate in and get more out of it. Also should be more than 405 torque, I had a 93 with 475...same horse tho....

Re: Cummins 6BT Power
So... any Cummins experts on here that can tell me the best way to upgrade without damaging my engine (or doing too much damage to my wallet)?

Re: Cummins 6BT Power
This thread below was very helpful to me. It's really pretty easy to get a few extra ponies out of it. But it's a good idea to have a EGT guage, know the limits of the tranny you have so you don't hurt it. Depending on how much you want to spend I would think a 4in exhaust, tuned AFC housing, timing bumped up to 16deg, 3k govern springs you would see a really good improvement.

Simply because I am not running a fuEl plate at the moment and I don't know for sure but I think no plate with a ground foot can give me rack enough travel to hang in the open position. This one seems like a good one. http://www.dieselram.com/showthread.php?t=184069

Re: Cummins 6BT Power
Thanks. The rig is equipped with EGT and boost gauges. I'll read through those threads and I may be back with questions.
