Re: Classic Trucks: Other Makes

That thing is cool as all get out. I've never seen one of those, but it seems I've heard the name. I know that Panhard is the name of the man who invented the solid rear coil suspension partby that name. Musta been talking to someone who brought them up. Thanks for showing that... that... thing

I just realized all those have wide whitewalls. Funny how a trend that never existed comes to life the second time around.

OK guys, I know this thing's a Ford AND I just had my mechanic friend install a Jasper 300 6 cylinder engine in it, but I'm having a weird issue.

When I try to start it, it just clicks. It is not the battery or solenoid (just replaced). In fact, I kept clicking it trying to make it start and my ground wire running from the alternator to the solenoid started smoking and the insulation was melting off of it.

Mechanic friend says he's never heard of that happening. So now the truck is at my house and I cannot get it started. He's coming to look at it, but he's deer hunting all week.

Any suggestions from you truck guys would be appreciated & I'll pass it along to him. GTT

Re: Classic Trucks: Other Makes

Could be the starter or solenoid is fried. Have you tried hammering the starter in case it is stuck in the flywheel?

Drove it all weekend deer hunting just fine......Monday afternoon clicked & wire smoked. Went and put a new solenoid on it and it cranked right up. Tuesday morning, clicked again.

Starter is a year old. Battery is a year old.

Something is frying the ground wire. Not sure what'd doing that. Never heard of that before.

Re: Classic Trucks: Other Makes

I suspect the starter is dragging putting a strain on the solenoid. When it was starting did it crank normal speed or slow?

Normal. Guy who put the motor in came to get it from my house today. He said he’s gonna try another alternator and check the starter. He’s also gonna replace the melted ground wire. Not sure if it’s related or not,but the brake lights aren’t working. Headlights, taillights, and signals all work, but brake lights do not come on.

Re: Classic Trucks: Other Makes

Just (both) brake lights I'd suspect the switch. But the truck could have some ground issues.

Some work went into this International. Where's the dang 5th wheel?

Yes, he did. He made it into a tow truck with a rather large diesel drivetrain.

Ck the ground wire from the battery to the block. Looks like it's trying to find ground. Had the same thing happen on my 72 it melted the 14 gage wire from the battery terminal to the fender the bolt was loose on the ground at the head

You were correct. My friend replaced the burnt wires and regrounded the thing in about four different places and now everything is fine.

Thumbs up Re: Classic Trucks: Other Makes

Good to know. Glad to hear it.

I'm slowing it down a little with stock antique trucks. How 'bout that? A Lincoln pic'mup. 'Could you please pass the Poupon?'

Re: Classic Trucks: Other Makes

We have a street rod club, western Maryland Street Rodders, who took an antique truck a local dairy had and did a tasteful street rod job on it. First thing my buddy said was they could have used better wheels but I think I get it. I think they chose those for having resemmblence to the wooden spoke wheels it originally had. I like it. I forget the story, but it may be stock other than the wheels, but the club got together and restored it at least. I believe it has a newer engine in it

That's a neat little truck - it looks like they did a nice job. Painting the wheels per the originals would give it that last little nod toward originality.
