between fender well and bedside..welt or no?

hi. i am redoing my bed wood on the 68 fleetside.
i took the fender wells off obviously. it looks like they may have had some seam seal or some putty material? should i be reinstalling anything between the bedside and well...like welt or caulk or specific seam sealer or just leave a gap for water runoff to prevent rust?

any opinions welcome...thanks.

Re: between fender well and bedside..welt or no?

If you want original, there was a caulk-like material in there that was not visible when assembled. I suggested to the shop that did the body of my truck that they use ribbon caulk like that used on RVs. They used something else that body shops use. No reason why the RV type caulk wouldn't work though. However, you probably don't want it to ooze out. Probably not necessary though.

I omitted it when I restored my truck.

I personally would put some seam sealer in there. As water gets in there over time it will rust, whether there's paint or no paint. The seam sealer is just one more barrier to help keep the rust at bay.
In the desert you can probably do fine without it but in a wet climate I wouldn't skimp.

thats the type of thing i was looking for. thanks. wont need to be paintable as the truck is already painted...i will just scrape off the old stuff (could be that as it looks grey) touch it up with blk paint and add that stuff. i assumed would help with vibration and metal to metal contact when the bed flexes

Yes, replace it . A repro. cloth felt like welting is made through one of the major vendors. Specifically for this. Which one? Clean it up,apply some rust converter, then seal,re-assemble
