Thanks Don!

Was able to get the priming done today. Getting better at laying primer. The doors are looking good.

Now I have to get hinges cleaned up and shot then hang the doors. Bought a new set of hinges for the driver's side, old ones were worn out. Soaking the passenger side hinges in vinegar. Was intrigued by the idea. One of the many reasons I love this forum are the tips and tricks that people post. If you haven't seen the thread on vinegar, here is the link:

Re: 65 Stepside Frame off Resto

Hi-

I did the same thing and bought a 65 stepside on eBay sight unseen. It was "ready for paint" with many new parts, but in reality needed a ton of bodywork. I'm new to the forum here and will upload pics soon. I'm enjoying your thread & look forward to more! Nice work!

Thank you! I hope yours is closer to "ready for paint" than mine was. Looking back on the ad on eBay I now laugh at what was supposedly done to the truck. All I can say is never again will I buy sight unseen from eBay. Wish I knew about this forum before I bought my truck.

Good luck on your truck. Look forward to seeing your pictures and plans. This is by far the best forum I have participated in. Tons on nice and knowledgeable people with great builds. You should check out the FAQs, there is so much great information about doing most everything.

If you have any questions just PM me and I will help anyway I can.

Re: 65 Stepside Frame off Resto

Life is clearly getting in the way of working on my obsession. My daughter bought a house this week and is getting married next week so I have not been able to do much on the truck. We did get a chance to hang the doors on the cab including putting on the latches and fitting (not gluing) the seals. Its amazing that it can take hours to fit and adjust one door. Over all they came out pretty well.

Man, that looks Great!
Progress is awesome, even if it is in small doses... I empathize with you over the life stuff...
Didn't get to Harbor Freight yesterday due to rescheduling, but will be picking up that grinder and getting on that fender soon, thanks again for the info.

Looks great.
I know what you mean by "life getting in the way".
Poor 'ol Bompenstein feels abandoned.

Doors look great on the cab.

Thanks! Looking forward to seeing the fender patch all ground down.

It's too bad there is that cash flow thing, life would be much more fun without it. Looking forward to your week off, Bompenstein will be happy!

Thanks on the doors. Couldn't believe it took hours to fit and adjust the doors. Thankfully there are hammers and wood blocks for the fine tuning.

Thanks! I was relieved that they did fit like they did. With them coming off another truck and replacing the driver's side skin they turned out pretty good. As I always say, rather be lucky than good!

The right door on mine fits pretty good, but the left door is really bad and it's the orignal door. The curve near the gas fill hole isn't even shaped to match the door. I have to fix it. Plus need to fill the large gaps.
I'll post pictures on my build thread when I do it.

It's amazing some of the fit issues when the trucks left the factory. I keep reminding myself that trucks were work vehicles so no one seemed to sweat the details. All they wanted was a strong vehicle that ran.

Re: 65 Stepside Frame off Resto

Gonna lose the rest of the week, my daughter is getting married on Friday. The wedding is in a state park and the family is gathering for 3 days there with the last night being the wedding. Family is starting to arrive today. Hope it all turns out well cause I could have bought and built another truck for what its costing me.

Wish all of you a happy and fun 4th!

Jeff,
I'm secretly racing you to see who will finish their truck first, you or me! LOL!
I have a 65 and first saw what you were up to on another forum. Good progress. If you have any more weddings, I'll catch up!
You have a shop and I don't, so the heat, mosquitoes and weather are the things that delay me.

Nice job on the doors. I gotta get my cab in epoxy primer before I start on my doors.

Jay - Guess the secret is out! I follow along on your website on your progress. The only reason I have a shop is I kicked our cars out of the garage and let the truck take over. We have had a cool and wet summer so far so I am lucky that it has been decent to work in. I am sure SC humidity is tough this time of year. Most of my family lives in Arkansas so I understand how tough it can be to work during the middle of the day.

So not only is the wedding slowing me down, my nephew for CA is sticking around next week so it will be golfing and movies for part of it. I have made sure he understands that at least one day will be working on the truck.

I also have to get better at ordering parts. We were all ready to put on the radiator support and front fenders yesterday but I had not ordered the radiator support bushings hence my own induced delay.

We are both getting to the fun phases of our builds. Sure nice to have the cab and doors all patched up and some primer on them. I now get to actually assemble something.

For me, ever since I bought my parts truck, I have 2 of just about everything. I just have trouble remembering where I put it.
I often let my brain get ahead of my hands . . . meaning I order stuff I don't need for another year or so. Then I can't remember where I put it. I have 4 of each door, 3 hoods, 5 fenders, etc. . . .
However, I did remember to order the radiator support mounts. Maybe I will catch up to you after all!

It is amazing how much this forum motivates and inspires. I agree, anyone who is making their truck better and sharing on this forum is a winner!

When you find your parts you ordered over a year ago see if my inner fender grommets are with them. I ordered them in October and they seem to have grown legs.

So it has been a while since posting. Life took over my build for the last few weeks. My daughter got married last Friday with a lot of family around for the week prior and after. I am a very proud Dad, she has worked through tough times and come out on top.

Here is my daughter, grand daughter and new son in-law:

Jeff,
Congrats on the nice family! Glad to hear you make them a priority. The truck will be there when the dust settles from all this marriage stuff.
I'm married to a saint who thinks that my new hobby of wrenching on trucks is pretty cool. When the truck is done, we'll build more memories. These are the "good old days" that we're living right now.

We had a ball at the wedding. It was at a local state park and we were there for 3 days. Lot's of good times, food and a few beverages were consumed! My daughter thought her wedding was perfect which is all that counts!

Re: 65 Stepside Frame off Resto

We were able to get some work done this week. We got the inner fenders, fenders and front cross pieces mounted on the truck. After hearing some of the stories on repop parts I did not think we could get this done in a day. We did have to adjust some of the parts but were able to get them bolted together. Kind of surprised that the lines matched as well as they did.

We did go ahead and throw the hood on. It's just setting in place. I have a lot of work to do on the hood. Confirmed that we will be able to get this all lined up.

Now to take it all apart and start working on the hood and get my hands on some filler primer. Sure is nice to see my truck looking like a truck for the first time since October.
