power window regulators on the cheap

I got my first one built and here are a few pics. I added to the gear the guide due to the fact that without it the slop in the bearing is close to coming off the motor gear.

I used studs for the motor (welded in), I was afraid that I was wearing out the thread's in the 1/8 steel plate with as many times as I had it on and off. And my Harbor Freight tap was not the greatest.

Please no comments on my stellar welding.

The template was right on and only had to grind it once to made the gears fit together.

Now I have to do the other one!

looking good . that was a great idea to add the guide on there wish i had done that but mine are more towards the middle of the gear so maybe i wont have any problems none so far

i wiured mine up with wiring and switches from an aftermarket power window kit i had but you could use any factory wiring and switches from a junk yard if you want most gm stuff is wired up the same

Has anyone installed their modified regulators yet? Does the window move through the whole range correctly?

I was worried, looking at the angles in the template and other picture, that the motor is not placed properly. Maybe it's an optical illusion.

Since the gear is repositioned 90º from the arm, it would make sense that the motor would need to be 90º to maintain the same relationship. It's hard to tell but Colgad's looks correct.

the motor bracket is mounted at an angle because when you mount the regulator in the door the regulator plate that bolts to the door is at a slite upward angle . if i would have made the motor bracket 90 degrees to the regulator bracket the regulator would have ran out of teeth before the glass got all the way to the top

Too late. I couldn't wrap my head around the need to not be 90º. My Suburban is at the shop (work) and I have some metal and spare regulator at (home) shop so I built this. I guess I'll find out if it works soon enough.

So, has anyone adapted a factory power window harness for control of the passenger window as well as the driver side from the driver's door switch?
I know there are aftermarket kits for these, but trying to keep with the "On the Cheap" Theme here.....any ideas?

I havnt done my finish wiring but plan on getting switch's from ecology just putting a right and left switch and mounting them some how under the heater controls where a driver and pass can access them leaving the door panels smooth and clean

I have seen this developing over the last couple of days, and I have been thinking about how to keep it looking as stock as possible. There was some company that made switches that allowed you to use the factory window handle to bump it up or down, activating the switch but it goes for $150 for a pair of switches.

I thought of making a mechanism of using 80's style GM chrome switch inside of a bracket inside the door, or a using newer style rocker switch with a lever attached to the window crank to rock the switch, plus adding stops to keep the lever over the switch and springs to keep it centered, in keeping with being "on the cheap"

I just got my welder and might try this.

Can't you just use a couple of micro switches, like you can buy at radioshack, to do the same thing? Vintage air uses micro switches on thier AC units with the cable driven controls. Just an idea.

That would be better. I will check out Fry's. Especially since they are already in a format that allows for mounting. See, this is why I posted my idea and see what everyone might say to improve upon it.

This has been on my mind as well. My thought is to use micro-switches activated by the window cranks. Much like the pricy fancy models offered, but with $10 micro-switches. There is very little amperage going through the switch so a small switch is all that is needed.

It will be months before I get to this stage in my build. So if anyone wants to take the lead I can help with info on possible switch selection.
