99-06 GMC rather than Chevy

Im looking a getting a 99-06+ Chevy 1/2 ton probably 4x4, or better looking a GMC

What year did they change to the goofy looking slanted head light/ hood / grille...2002?
I cant stand the look of that front end slant eyed headlight area design

But the GMC looks better , and I can handle that look

Are the GMC trucks the same mechanically / motor (Vortex)etc as the chevy ?
In other words is the front body and emblem/ badges / design the only difference between a Chevy and GMC

Un like the old days when GMC ran Pontiac motor in the '50s

Are there any years between 99-2007-7 to avoid or had and engine issues etc that I should be aware of? Are certain years more desirable that had and mechanical improvements

Rick ,
PS I havent been paying attention since the 60s 70s and 80s
