Fuel draining back through pump

For the longest time I always ran a fuel filter right before the pump. I did some reading and found that your supposed to run it between the pump and carb.
I did that and noticed that within minutes my filter would be dry, which would make it hard to start.
I read that there's supposed to be a check valve built into the pump to avoid this. I have a lifetime warranty on the mechanical pump, so I switched it out, but I still have the same problem.
The fuel pump is an Oreilly's Precision unit. Did I just happen to get a defective unit, or is this normal?

Re: Fuel draining back through pump

I like to run the larger metal fuel filter and I have put filter right before fuel pump. I can not seem to get the metal line and rubber hose to fit correctly before carb. I do not like the cheapy Q-jet filter that fits inside the carb housing. Although I have read that site plugs do not leak as most people think, I still put epoxy over well plugs when I rebuild a q-jet. I dont see a problem with leaving fuel filter by fuel pump.

Re: Fuel draining back through pump

The fuel pump valves are just check valves. If no filter between tank & pump then if you suck debris into the pump & it gets lodged in a valve then the pump no worky.
If you suspect pump valves leaking try removing the suction line from the pump & put a bucket under it & see what may drain out.
You will have to plug the inlet hose from the tank.

Re: Fuel draining back through pump

I forgot to mention I have a vacuum secondary Quick Fuel carb that's fairly new if that makes a difference.
The strainer on my sending unit is still in good condition so the fuel getting to my pump is nice and clean. I have also verified this several times since I've drained the lines a few times removing and installing the pump.
So I'll swap out the new pump to see if I got a defective unit.

I made my own hard lines running from the pump to the carb. When I was running an Edelbrock I had hard line from the pump all the way to the carb. With the Quick Fuel I know have a section of rubber hose between the hard lines so I could run the filter.

Re: Fuel draining back through pump

There ya go, if you run a metal filter you won't see the fuel draining out any more. I think it is the fuel pump. Mine used to do it but I haven't checked for a while.

Re: Fuel draining back through pump

I've never encounterd this issue running the filter between carb and pump. Somethings up. Maybe orielly brand doesn't have the check valve for some stupid reason?
