'72 Blazer rear hatch
I went up to Kansas last Thanksgiving and picked up a double wall top for my '72 Blazer. The seller threw in a fairly ragged out rear hatch, and hinges, but he had sold the latch hardware on Ebay a couple weeks before. Anybody out there know where I can find either the latch hardware, or maybe a complete rear hatch. The hatch I have is salvageable, but the hinges have a lot of slack in them. I've already been sniped on ebay for one set of this hardware, and am starting to despair that I'll ever find any. I've been driving this beast since '89, and it's finally earned the right to some TLC.

I have a MINT hatch with all the hardware and a key. I would like to get $400.00 for it, and shipping might kill you. I live in Washington 98501. I had a friend who has a boat building business refiberglass and fix this hatch. It really is MINT. I can email pictures if needed. Here is a picture of my top and hatch he did so you can see his handywork.

Thanks for the quick post, 1970blazin. Right now, that's a little higher than I am capable of going, but I'll definitely keep you in mind. I'm still gathering parts for what will hopefully be a winter project. I have a fair amount of internal body cancer to fix, in addition to the top.

You can buy hatches new for around $385, but they don't include the hardware, glass, seal, etc.

For $400, 1970Blazin has a pretty good deal. I've seen the hardware sell for over $100 alone! I need a hatch too, but it isn't in the budget. I actually have never even put my hard top on - just run the soft top.

If you guys need a handle, check out your local hardware store. Go to the aisle that they sell replacement garage door hardware at and get a T-handle. They fit perfectly and look almost identical. Under $10 with brand new chrome and 2 keys. You cant beat that. The brand I got came on a turquioise backed blister package.

Understand, I am NOT questioning the price. If the pics are any indication, it would be well worth it. But I don't have $500 hanging around right now, and it would take me a couple months to set it aside (that is, without my wife caressing my head with a crowbar). I do work within a self imposed allowance. I just don't feel right asking someone to hold something that long. Measuring mine say's I can't use UPS, so we're looking at truck freight(?). I'm just trying to be a realist in the here and now, and acknowledge I can only afford the hardware. I am new to this board, hope to be here a LOOOONG time, and do not wish to bruise feelings!!! PANT. PANT. PANT. Sorry, didn't mean to get so long winded. Here's a pic of my Beast, so you can see what I have to do in addition too top work.

3wbdriver - relax, it's ok. We all (well most of us) have budget & wives with crow bars! That is exactly the same reason I'm not buying a new hatch right now!
As far as shipping large items, Greyhound is a great way to go. I had Kilomanjaro (the guy you bought your top from) ship me a rear seat via Greyhound (his idea) for $35. Since then I've had my parents ship a dresser they made up from Oregon for $45! The freight company wanted over $100 for the dresser and a moving company wanted $300. The only down side is that you have to go pick it up at the terminal. It looks like you've got a nice start on a rig there. Give us some details.

3wbdriver- like bouncytruck said relax... we are all really laid back here. I was just throwing out my hatch and price. I totally understand the $$ issue. I've had this hatch for a while, and probably will with that high of a price. I think it is probably worth either that or close to that. Good luck finding the hardware. Sometimes I see that stuff on ebay...just keep lookin'

Believe me guys, if Blazin still has that thing in late November, and I haven't found at least the hardware by then, I'll be ready to haggle. I bought this in '89 (Actually was looking for a good CJ-5), paid $2,000 knowing the engine needed a rebuild, and spent that summer getting it running. Except for 2 short periods, it's been my daily driver since. My wife is on her 5th car since then, and this thing is still going strong. I ran a Bestop on it until last year, but the driver's side kick panel has rotted so much at the floor joint, the steering wheel was dropping 3/4" whenever I opened the door, and I've literally crushed the door in the front to rear plane from forcing it closed. I HAD to get a hard top, just to stiffen the body up until I could fix it. I've got 2 front fenders, rocker panels, and a better driver's door to put on it. And built a shop, and am still gathering parts. I'm just waiting for the heat index down here to drop back into the low nineties, so I can park it and start on cleaning it up. I'm not going for a full resto. Just wanna fix the cancer, and get it as straight as my limited abilities will allow. Here is a pic of it in '89, right after I bought it.

Couldn't tell you if it's normally sought after or not. I just know I need it, I've only seen it on ebay twice, and no one makes it as a replacement part. I was sniped in the last 30 seconds on the last ebay I saw, and I apologized to that buyer for driving him up to $120 (max I would pay for used). If you know of some in your area, please let me know......

If it's metal, and it attaches to the hatch, I need it. I have the end plates that hold the back of the top down, but nothing else. The hinges I have are even pretty sloppy (pin wear i assume).

Gee_Emm - I am interested in that hardware if you come across any again. I have an old hatch that is missing the hardware, that I would love to sell as a whole unit. Let me know a price and if you can get a whole set or not. I do have a few pieces, so if you can't get a whole set I can tell you what I am missing and maybe I can complete my set of hardware and you can make a few bucks. Thanks!

Gee_Emm, I need the right hatch support, the metal piece that extends to hold up the hatch when open. If you know where I can locate one at a reasonable price I would appreciate it. Or if anyone else could point me in the right direction.

I bought the repop hatch about 4 years ago from Brothers. I talked them down to $385 because I had seen that price in Cheyenne's catalog. A few years later I was in the Bay Area on a windshield frame hunt [bagged one -- still hav'nt grafted it in yet] and Jerry Moss, the seller turned me on to Abe [www.vintageblazer.com] who was parting out a '69 K/5. I got the guts -- relay rods and end latches -- less handle for $50. Last year the key tumbler in my handle came out when I pulled out the key. I got a replacement handle from Golden State. It ran under $30. It's not OEM but I can lock it. I use this truck to keep my work tools in and sometimes I have to park downtown.
Blazer hatch hardware (The Guts) is real hard to find. This may not help, but some of the components are similar to the liftgate guts on the '67-'72 Suburban. I modified a right side hatch latch from a Sub component with some grinding of a corner, but it broke after a year anyway. |

Thanks for the welcome. I'm right at halfway between Shreveport, and Lake Charles. Due east of the south end of Toledo Bend lake (I have an irresistable urge to throw in "Turn left at the dirt road by the lightning struck live oak"). I work as a contractor on Ft Polk, and have been racing local dirt roundy round since '96. This is the first winter since then, that I'm not building a car. So My baby finally gets some TLC.
