Post Model Differences

For my web site I'm putting together a page to list the visual and mechanical differences between the 67-72 models. So far I've got the 67-70 models documented. I still need to add the 71 and 72. Had a great discussion on another post about the grills on the 69 and 70.

If you want to check out what I've documented so far go here:
http://www.lunarpages.com/pattson/67_72_models.htm

All input is welcome -- critical or otherwise.

The only major difference that I can think of off the top of my head in Identifying them is the mounting of the rear view mirror.

The 72 model I believe was also lacking an emblem on the hood that the 71 had.

Mmm, I dont know about that, both 71 and 72 had bowties on the grill, so they wouldnt have one on the hood.

No badge diferance except in 71 there was no cheyanne super...that was only in 72.
The mirror was bolted in 71, glued in 72.
That is about all I can think of.

there are lots of differences from 71 to 72, 72 bb mounts differ from 68-71, the rear view mirror deal, doors are not same as 67-71 and even 67 have one minor difference that i dont think many know about, plus 67 dash knobs arent same anyways,. 67 68 trucks did not come with rear view mirrors as standard equipment, 68 20 and 30 series could get lights in the side markers if dual rear wheels was ordered, 72 VIN begin with 3 letters instead of two as previous years did, only 72 had door frame black plastic vents

i could go on and on, there are thousands of differences in 67-72 that no one could type out in a single post, theres no way, more than one single person can realize all at once

i looked at your page, loks good, info that needs corrected include, what you call side marker lights are actually not called lights til 69 or in 68 when dual rear wheels option was ordered, otherwise theya re called side marker reflectors per GM wording,
not just some CST in 68 had upper body side moldings, it was actually all the two tone trucks CSt or not, so,,,,
in 67-70 there was only one scheme of two tone available, in 71-up there were two schemes available,

the B98 body side moldings in 68 came on CST trucks Z84, and with the B98 order which is RPo code for the moldings themselves, the chrome grille came with B98, Custom Z62 and CST Z84
there were alot more than just one 4 speed available each year, there were NP 4 speed trannies and warner 4 speed trannies and others, its all listed in the specificatiuons packs from GM, as is all this other info plus way more

SM318 3 speed standard in 67 68 with 250 engine, S326 was optional

SM326 3 speed came with the 292 and all larger engines

CH465 4 speed was standard in C30 trucks in 68-up,
SM420 4 speed std in all 67 C30 trucks,

69-up no more SM318, all models got Sm326 except 4x4 models which got the SM330, which is very uncommon to find, very,.,

283 std in 67, 327 optional, 396 opt,
307 std in 68, 327, 396 opt
307 std 69-72, 350, 400 optional

3.73 std ratio in all 10 trucks
3.07 opt in all 10 trucks
4.11 opt in all 10 trucks cept the K trucks
3.54 dana came with 396 and certain trannies in 69 or 70 10 trucks

could go on forever with this, might as well quit now lol

My understanding is the CST Z84 and Custom Z62 are totally unrelated to the B98 option-Custom Side molding? Most Customs/CST were equipped with the side trim but I'm pretty sure its a seperate option. I think later years in our series the body side molding was included in with the CST/Cheyenne options.

The chrome trim on the grill was unrelated to the CST or Custom options (In 68's anyway) or even the body side molding option. Even basic plain-Jane 68's could still have chrome grill trim. (But it seems not all?) 68's also have the front fender trim and front hood trim that no 67's had. Also the front of the 68 grill was usually white behind the inserts. (Your picture on your site shows this well.)

Also, isn't there a slight difference between the 71 and 72 grill? I think one year had a black pin stripe(s) around the chrome grill edge and one didn't.

true,. tom, yeah Z62 and Z84 make no mention of grille opening bright trim or headlamp bezel bright pieces, also neither does the B98 custom side molding option, so I am unsure how any trucks recieved grille bright moldings or headlamp bezels or eyebrows and hood edge moldings, there is no mention of any of the three in the GM specs of 1968.

However I know for a fact that the bright eyebrows, hood leading edge molding, grille opening moldings and bezels all come with B98, for sure.
Chrome front bumper wil not though, it wil recieve white grille and white bumper if its plain jane and only B98 ordered.
And no rear bumper comes with anything of course unless you specifically order one.

Standard plain jane 68 trucks with no B98 or Z62 or 84 options got silver painted grille no matter color of truck, and also 67 trucks did too

Only CST Z84 got chrome bumper.
Z62 Custom confort and appearance got painted front bumper

i thnk you are referring to the black in the 71 72 gmc grilles

The mirror was still an option in '69, and the side markers were optional in 69, standard in 70.
The 2 tone was avalable in both styles in 69, longhon Jeff has proof of that with his 69, white/green/white/green.
The CST (in 69/70..unsure of 67/68) came with the lower woodgrain trim incuded.
I'm 99% sure the grill in 71/71 was the exact same.

Here's an example of a base 68 truck lacking the custom chrome side trim yet has the chrome grill treatments. I have seen a few others. Longhornmail mentioned that there was a dealer kit where plain 68 grills could be retrofitted with the chrome treatment. Perhaps that's how this truck got its chrome trim. It's funny there almost seems to be no hard and fast rule on this.

I hate to break your heart again Randy by posting the link to this C/30!

Yeah, it was a dealer installed item in early 68, but many dealers did not bother.
