Brake Pedal Height

How high should the brake pedal be? It is probably 1 1/2" away from the bracket that has the rubber stops on it. This is an automatic so no clutch pedal. I always wondered what the bracket under the steering column was for until I came across a thread that said it was a stop for the brake/clutch pedals. I do have about 1/4 to 1/8" play in the brake pedal
