Oil filter adaptor leak

OK, so searching didn't turn up the info I need, so here goes.

I have a pretty big oil leak coming from the housing ABOVE the oil filter on my 283. I have searched high and low, and cannot seem to find a part number for the o ring that seals the adaptor to the block. See attached picture.

I have searched on rock auto, napa, autozone, lmc, classic industries, oreilly's, etc, and have had zero luck finding that seal.

Do any of you know what the correct search term is for this part, or perhaps have a part number I can reference?

I can't drive Hot-dog until this leak is fixed.

Re: Oil filter adaptor leak

I haven't seen that type of oil filter adapter before. Seems like a bad design since it is using one o-ring to seal to the block and then the oil filter o-ring to seal to the adapter. You're likely not going to find an application for that. You need to know the size of the o-ring and buy it. Parts store won't have an idea of what you're talking about.

Better yet, dump that setup and get the factory type adapter. No issues with leaking as the only o-ring is the one on the filter, that seals to the block. Just like the factory did it.

Re: Oil filter adaptor leak

hmmm. so, in reading about this adaptor, how does it seal? The filter I use isn't wide enough to contact the edge of the block

do you have any pictures?

Re: Oil filter adaptor leak

I had this exact same problem with my old 327. I ended up going back with old style canister to prevent from leaking. I tried 3 different adapters before I went back to old canister. People installed the adapters to be able to use spin on filters instead of cartridge style. Good luck man.

Mike the factory adapter only fits 68 and newer blocks 67 and before have to use the adapter he has with the bypass plate in place and the canister square cut o-ring / gasket

Okay, learned something new. Guess in all my 30 years I have never dealt with a pre '68 block.

Re: Oil filter adaptor leak

JT, that look like the seal I took off the block from my brother's impala. I'll have to go and re-measure it, but that looks right.

What's the consensus on using a bit of hi-temp silicone to basically "glue" it in place? Bad Idea?

Re: Oil filter adaptor leak

Should not need any silly putty ... Make sure the by-pass plate is in there as it retains the seal

That's right- It's possible to install the adapter without the by-pass & it can make the filter gasket leak & even blow it out!

Re: Oil filter adaptor leak

all right, an update.

Fixing Hotdog hasn't exactly been a high priority for me, but I did finally manage to get the WIX seal that was suggested.

The issue is that I made a mistake.

The original picture i posted was of a similar adaptor that was found on the 283 that came from my brother's Impala block. My truck block has a different type of adaptor/filter mount. I've included pictures and video of the mount and oil leak location.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKtioQZJS-o

the question now becomes, who's adaptor is this, and how do i take it off?

Re: Oil filter adaptor leak

Man I aint never seen one of those. But grab that threaded nipple & use it to try to twist it out. Maybe even an EZ Out up inside the nipple if you can't get a pipe wrench in there.

Re: Oil filter adaptor leak

WHOs? NO clue ..... AS to How to take it off I would try to turn the center piece with the six holes it looks like it threads on to the center tube ... I would NOT try to turn the center nipple......IT probably still takes the same (NEW) seal ring you have

Re: Oil filter adaptor leak

JT, well the center nipple will move a little bit in either direction, but there is no give beyond 1/4" turn in either direction. I'm afraid of damaging this stupid thing.

I checked the WIX o-ring, but it's too thick to fit this particular adaptor. You can see the smallness of the gap between this setup and what i originally posted.

Re: Oil filter adaptor leak

Well SOMETHING has to move, if it was mine the nipple would be small concern cause I would chuck it & replace it with something more mainstream that seals could be had for. I think that is an "Elco" adapter, not like the Mr Gasket style we've all used before. On the Mr Gasket style the nipple came separate & had to be threaded into the adapter & also came with some red Loctite. But this one I dunno! well let's back up a little, we should be able to figure this out. The filter by-pass is under that adapter, & if I remember correctly it threads into the block & then the filter screw threaded into that to hold the can on. So if the by-pass is still threaded into the block then that adapter should be threaded into the by-pass. That sound correct?

Re: Oil filter adaptor leak

here is that adapter https://www.summitracing.com/parts/TRD-1024/ you are missing the PAL nut that holds it in place until you tighten the spin-on filter on..... Looks like you should be able to hook something in one of the slots and pull it down/out and replace the seal .. It does use a F@#D type filter as the bypass is built into the filter and with that kit the ORIGINAL bypass is REMOVED
