2000 longbed Silverado--rear mystery rattle

Hi I just got a 2000 longbed v6 automatic--first contemporary truck I had in a while.
I had a 91 ford that caught fire and burned a yr ago--only reason I had it was it cost $750 and could pull anything I needed-- but the damn thing Rode Like a Runaway Boat.

Anyway i got this silverado and the rattle from the rear---is got me stumped, Its got loose bedside on the beatup bed but that cannot be what it is, It sounds like from spinning drive-line-- something loose and rattling bad on its axis, Ive crauled under it many times and looked at the driveshaft and brake calipers and tailpipe but cant figure out what it is?? its intermitten and at low speeds when crusing around town--not at hwy speeds.
any usual suspects for what im describing-- there is no loss of power transmission like a rearend gear goung out--That would be felt when driving

i would give the tail gate a lift and push pull on all four corners.

The emergency brake is built into the calipers isn't it? the calipers are bolted solid, ill check into it and the tailgate but I have checked it, any more tips? thanks

I would very carefully put the truck up on jack stands, crank it up, and put it in low gear. This way, if it's a drivetrain problem at lower RPMs, you can locate it better. If its a rattle in the body then you can test it w/o running or driving. Bounce on the rear bumper, in the bed, shake the truck from side to side and try to replicate the noise. Also, check the spare tire and carrier to make sure it isn't rattling.

The parking brake is not built into caliper, It has a little brake shoe behind the rotor....& causes ALOT of problems on these trucks.

ok how do I get the little plastic lug nut covers off this damn truck?

Loosen the 6 plastic nuts holding it on....#3 in the diagram

I got the 16" alloys, the center hub cover does not got a slot for a big screwdriver-pry tool to pop it out.

I got the 16" alloys --The center hub cover does not got a slot in the edge of the cover for a big screwdriver-pry tool to pop it out. Thanks for the parking brake tip--Ill find a good thread about dealing with that problem.

The black lugnut caps are not supposed to be removed from the center cap. Put a socket on it and loosen by hand. The 6 plastic lugnut caps are designed to stay on the cap. Loosen all of them and it will fall off

next time u hear the rattle pay attention to see if it does it when you hit small bumps in the road, the rear leaf springs have little plastic pads between them at the ends which tend to break and dissapear then the tips of the leaves will rattle together on small bumps. every one of these newer gms I've had does this and most of my friends dmaxs also.
