Truck Transplant Tomorrow

I am getting a little excited and at my age it takes a bit to get me excited. Tomorrow morning my truck is going in to get the 700R4 I bought last year installed. Never thought I'd be able to afford the swap but gotta great deal on the transmission last year. It was a door prize, professionally rebuilt by a local very reputable transmission shop, at a local car show and the winner didnt need it so I bought it from him. Along with the new rear end parts, truck was factory 3:73 ratio which I maintained, and Tru Trac I just had installed all that is left is to get the 400 small block I just got hot rodded and my whole powertrain will be upgraded.

That will be a great drivetrain. This one must be a keeper, tailored to suit you!

Keeper for sure Tim.. I turned 70 in May and have had the truck 5 years now and as you say have been tailoring it to suit me. Last big thing is the SB 400 if not next year then for sure the year after then using the truck I'll try to get that " Hot Rod Power Tour " thing off my bucket list..

Looking forward to photos. I'm planning on swapping in a 700r4 myself in the not too far off future.

Re: Truck Transplant Tomorrow

You'll be glad you kept the 3.73. A 350/700R/3.73 has been the combo in my truck since 2002, with the 0.7:1 OD ratio, it's a good all around gear.

Re: Truck Transplant Tomorrow

Ensure you set up the TV cable properly, or you can burn out the 700 pretty quick. It will require the right throttle/transmission bracket, and adjusting TV cable.

I'm actually having a shop do the swap and they have done many 700R conversions.

Re: Truck Transplant Tomorrow

You are just a puppy (I turned 70 last August). Still a ways away on my stepper but I can understand the excitement involved. Hope to have mine "mostly" done sometime around the first of the year. Wish I could go the 700 route but am way over my budget already. Bought a long block and had it souped up a bit and should be delivered in a few weeks. Have to have a heart procedure on the 8th of July so that will slow me down for a while but that's life.

Look after your ticker as you have to cause the stepper will be ready when you are.. I never thought I'd get a 700 in my truck either but got a super deal on this one so had to bite.

You're going to love it, I just put one in my 81. Absolutely no downside to that swap: the first gear is better, let alone 4th/OD.

My '67 project will be for the same intended use... hit the hiway. I'm six years behind you and I've been looking at what I want to do in my '70s.

There are a number of shows throughout the summer and fall, but nothing for just GM trucks I am aware of. Let me know the dates you are thinking of and I will see if anything is happening.

I guess I should have posted how its going with the truck. The 700R4 has been in for a week now. I haven't had a chance to drive the truck very much but its definitely different. My first impressions were that it was taking to long for the 2-3 shift but after checking with a couple friends who have them I guess thats normal. The truck pulls away quicker and even City Cruisiong at 30-35 mph I can tell it revving a lot less.
