Build 4 of 4... The BIG Dually. ..

Here we go.. yup... the build that ends my builds..
I came across a 67-72 C30 C&C chassis..
I've been toying with the idea of building a contemporary powered 60-66 dually for a long time... :-)
The price of free with free delivery was too good to pass up.
The Plan.....
Taking 30" out of the 157" wheel base and 6" off the tail.
That should result in a 127" wheel base and a frame the correct length to take a stock long bed box on it.
I want it much lower than stock, static suspension, able to pull a serious trailer. .. 5th wheel, goose neck or ball and receiver..
Here is the frame. .

Going with a 63 GMC cab... fleet long bed with stepside fenders recessed into the fleet bed...
And this is the front clip theme that I'm going to copy..

Re: Build 4 of 4... The BIG Dually. ..

I'm using a 67-72 steel bed floor on this build.
It's fitted to the frame now.
The rear frame rails on the C30 frame sit about 3" higher than a stock 1/2 ton frame. This means the bed floor will be raised inside the bed 3 inches.
I had to take 6" off the rear..
I am using a frame section out of a 3/4 ton to support the front 1/3 of the bed.
Raising the floor was a concern at first but after measuring I can now see the 5th wheel hitch will sit below the top of the bed sides..
That's good because I want to use a fiberglass tonneau cover.

Re: Build 4 of 4... The BIG Dually. ..

Bought a 62 cab and brought it home to use as a donor for an extended/crew cab.
I just couldn't bring myself to cut the frame and extending the cab just seems like the right thing to do...
I'll be posting some photos tomorrow.

Re: Build 4 of 4... The BIG Dually. ..

Yeah. ..
My day off today will be filled with moving forward on the trucks..
Take some photos. ...
Move forward a bit more...
Take more pictures. ..
However. ..
I'm really on the fence about doing a 30" extended cab or shorten the frame 30 inches.
I should be able to make up my mind by the end of the day.
I hope..

Re: Build 4 of 4... The BIG Dually. ..

here is some real good info on the correct way to do a notch for strength, I was originally just going to do a "deep" pipe notch, but after looking at this I think I will use the c notch kit I have...
http://talk.classicparts.com/showthr...964#post96964/
I got about 8 inches on my 66 1 ton frame just by doing the "flip kit" on the axle.

I'm not notching the frame...
But the information was very good.

I got about 8 inches on my 66 1 ton frame just by doing the "flip kit" on the axle.
The frame rails on this 72 dually frame that I'm using sit several inches higher than a 1/2 or 3/4 ton does...
I haven't finished preparing the bedfloor fitting for exact measurements but I'll need to raise the bed floor approximately 4 inches.. because of the frame. .
I am going to lower the truck but not in the ultra extreme way some on the forum have...
It's a nice look but my dually will need to be fully functional to pull a heavy trailer. :-D
A notch will not be necessary at all..
I will however, be scouring the local wrecking yards to find a leaf hanger. .. some brainiac torched a chunk out of one

Re: Build 4 of 4... The BIG Dually. ..

As things have progressed on this project. .. as parts were being collected. .. I got a huge pile of stuff collected on the bed floor of the truck.
Frankly, I've been all over the board on this build.
Drop it.. don't drop it... dually 1 ton... single wheel half. ..
A crew cab is about the only thing I'm concrete on doing..
Now there is a 4X4 idea that won't go away. .
I'm glad there are 2 other projects in front of this one.

Re: Build 4 of 4... The BIG Dually. ..

I've been collecting parts for months and have done absolutely no work on this project, whatsoever.
I do have enough parts now to build it. But no time.
It's buried under a ton of other project parts... I'll see if I can, at the very least, get photos.
