46 Chevy 2-ton barn find/build

I have a build thread over on killbillet.com, but wanted to share with you guys. I'll get you caught up.

Thought I would share my first project of this nature with everyone. I have known about this truck for several years and spent the last year trying to get it bought. The deal just went thru and I will be dragging it home in a couple days. Nobody knows how long it has been sitting, but it is a solid piece.

I have a 76 C20 Chevy with a 454/400 that I am about to part out for this project. I guess I could use that chassis, but I am heavily considering keeping the original chassis and big wheels on it. I think keeping the whole front cap is in order too since I have it and it is in excellent shape.

Thinking...thinking...thinking

Re: 46 Chevy 2-ton barn find/build

I will not be cutting on any sheetmetal, in any form or fashion. It's too good to chop.

Although I know this is a good canidate for a restoration, what fun is a fullsize 2 ton with a 6 cylinder?

Having said that I don't think the engine is salvageable. Some of the plugs are missing as is the carburetor, and have been for an undeterminable amount of time.

I figured now was the time to make her photogenic in the barn that has preserved her all these years. Enjoy!

Update:

Meeting with the sheriff today to file for title and registration.

Tires have been aired up and are holding air for over a month now.

Finished parting the '79 this week. 454/400 is going in the '46.

Re: 46 Chevy 2-ton barn find/build

My plan is to give it a good cleaning and leave the sheetmetal as-is.

The wood bed is coming off the allow access to the chassis.

Not sure if the front fenders will stay on or not.

Re: 46 Chevy 2-ton barn find/build

I pulled the truck over to the outdoor work area last night and torched all the old bed mounting brackets off, grounded off the welds, removed the trailer hitch, scraped, beat, and blew alot of crud off the chassis, and got the frame cleared of all foreign objects. I also got the door panels off and removed all the goodies the critters have left in there over time. So far I have gotten a 30 gallon trash bag full of crud out of it. Did all this in the mist of rain, but gotta keep the shop clean.

The plan is to remove the gas tank tonight and finish the initial cleaning in the cab.

The entire truck is getting high pressure steam cleaned on Friday.

Pics will follow.

Looks good. You are making better progress than I am. I want a wrecker but I decided to go with a tanker bed and make it look like an old gas/ oil truck.

Cool project. Thanks for sharing.
I saw that you Z-ed the rear, but did I miss the info on how you got the front stance?

Re: 46 Chevy 2-ton barn find/build

This is coming out nicely. One of the better uses of early big iron I've seen. Still appears to have some function, not just appearing to have funk.

I have a similar thing in mind to do with the wrecker unit/body on my '71 if I end up keeping the truck and putting a utility body on for a daily work truck. My friend has a '60 C40 I'd put it on. Maybe one day I'll manage to get back into the '40s with something. Meanwhile I'll dream through looking at yours.

Cool classic flat fender!...wheels,Warn hubs, and all. That's how I remember them.I always wanted to do one up royal. Does it by chance have a Buick V6 swapped-in? My buddy had one in the late-70s with those wheels,V6,and Desert Dog tires. I love the vintage 4x4s.

Just found your thread. Great work!! I'll enjoy watching your progress. Going to be interesting to see it finished. Are they ever finished, or do we just find a place to quit?

I'm working on a '46, so may learn something new from you.

Awesome project. Thanks for posting all the pictures of your BBC swap...will be helpful for my own nearly identical project on a '47 2-ton. Any words of advice on the fit of the 454? looks like almost too tight for an engine-driven radiator fan--did you go electric fan up front?

The engine install is pretty straight forward. Just fab up some motor mounts and sit it where you want it.

I haven't gotten around to finishing up the cooling system yet, but I will end up with a new aluminum radiator and an electric pusher fan.

47twoton, that is a cool find! But I call BS without a story! I like the bumper and grille guard to. I would flat bed that one! Let us know! How much did you pay?

puppy, this is a sweet build man. Where did you find that wrecker setup? It looks cool! I personally prefer the fenders on myself, but it is your truck. i love the art deco series chevys. I love that low, fat look they have. How much did the truck set you back?

Re: 46 Chevy 2-ton barn find/build

Howdy Truck Guy99,

OK, gotta fess up a new find (yesterday) that this is actually a 1946 (per the original title) stake bed truck. It's too new to the flock to have researched its pedigree, but the original title has the last name of the dude I bought it from...purportedly his granddad. Seems to match. Farm truck for carrying grain, with galvanized steel pan inserted into the bed. The front end has about twice the leaf springs as a stock 2-to. The sellers told me that was because it once had a boom up front for hoisting significant mass.

If I were a bone-stock purist, this would be a plausible restoration using the inline 6. My focus is on its potential for producing more work output with the 454 & taller tranny gearing. Original would be ok on the farm, but this ol' gal will see some highway time at some point.
