condensation in garage-how to stop???

Well, I restored the frame of my 72 Cheyenne Super last fall and it's been sitting in the garage all winter. I pulled it out today when I was Spring cleaning my garage and noticed surface rust on new bolts and on a few spots where the paint was thin. I've noticed when its cold and rainy that some metal objects in my garage get moisture on them. It's a basic A-frame 30X30 with loft on a concrete slab. There was no plastic put under the concrete - just poured on gravel. How can I stop the moisture - mainly on the truck? Would a large rubber mat under the truck help? Thanks for any help.

Re: condensation in garage-how to stop???

I just had to put vents in my roof, soffets and gable ends and also been running a dehumidifier to get condensation out of my garage, its 27x24 with an insulated ceiling and walls. I'm running natural gas heat in it and man it was getting wet everywhere, after I put the vents in I've had no problems

Re: condensation in garage-how to stop???

How`s the grade around the building? If water can get under the slab it will want to come up through. That`s the main source. The other is condensation from difference in temp in & out.Dehumidifiers help, but need draining.Air flow helps alot.I blow a small fan on my Harley just to keep moisture from settling on it.Heat takes it away, too. But,just a cieling fan helps.

Make sure the water is running away from the structure, keep the air moving inside and you will probably need to get a dehumidifier. and keep itt running

if it isn't heated and stays cold , it will sweat when warm temps hit cold objects

Re: condensation in garage-how to stop???

Mine is real bad about it. A lot of garage moisture problems are caused by water seeping up through the concrete and, of course, condensaton.

Also, most of them don't have a vapor barrier under the foundation like home slabs do -especially if they're detached. I saw a show on t.v. where they went in and sealed the concrete with a kit. If I was planning on staying in my house longer I would probably seal mine.

Re: condensation in garage-how to stop???

Thanks for the help so far. I left out some some info - it's detached and not insulated with a ridge vent on the roof. Nothing in my attic gets wet - just the stuff downstairs.

Re: condensation in garage-how to stop???

Do you have electric? You need circulation. If you can ad ventiation in the walls below the attic, that would be good.

Re: condensation in garage-how to stop???

Joshua,

Anything which you put on the truck which isn't painted will rust eventually I usually clean up the bare metal and wipe it with a bit of phosphoric acid -- it creates a grey surface coat which won't prevent painting later, but will deter rust for a very long time.

Re: condensation in garage-how to stop???

CDowns,

You're right, but for important bolts, I'm worried about the difference in shear properties between schedule 8 and stainless.
