Well it's not a Chevy....

I have been trying for a while to figure out a new way to load pictures since google messed picasa up. This is one of the projects that I have been working on since I moved back to Colorado. Once I get more pictures transfered, I will populate this thread. but for now, here are some teasers.

Re: Well it's not a Chevy....

Here's what came out. The most lethargic 460 ever. We spent a lot of time removing emissions garbage, tried a Holley, then an Edelbrock carb, installed an Edelbrock Performer RPM (too much intake), and even an DUI HEI trying to get the thing to get out of its own way. From there, we rebuild the C6 (someone previously left out the vacuum modulator rod) and then rebuilding the NP208 due to a failed shift fork... so what you see here only has about 800 miles on it before we pulled the plug. We kept it running until I was done rebuilding the 24V. I actually had to stop working on the short block to rebuild the C6.

So far it is awesome. it has about 1700 miles on it so far. I have driven it for a shake down run and a couple other times and I think the combo is very balanced.

Some things and observations:

1. We used a stock 12V cam (PN 3929042) and gear, so the front cover and timing set are all VE. This also gave us the ability to run a mechanical lift pump.

2. We used the factory VP44 lines adapted with Tine-serts. Because we used the later style discharge valves (short) I had to massage the lines forward to connect to the pump.
(side note: I have .dxf files of adapters I designed)

3. We used +50hp 24V injectors, also from Scheid, and after running them with the factory VP44 pop pressure, pulled them and had them reset to the VE pressure. With the higher pressures, the engine sounded like it had a mechanical tick that was fairly loud.

4. I took Ryan's advice and gave it a 2-tooth bump.

5. We are using an H1C with an 18cm^3 housing and don't have any lag issues.

6. We have a bone stock 96 Dodge 12V/NV4500/4.10 truck in the fleet, and this 24V/NV4500/4.10 runs so much better in every way.

I'm still trying to figure out how to upload them without them rotating themselves.

Re: Well it's not a Chevy....

Well, after 6600 miles, we finally grafted together the A/C. This truck is daily driven, so this will be a welcome option, I'm sure. Sorry that I still haven't figured out how to get my pictures rotated the right way

Re: Well it's not a Chevy....

A few more of how I closed the gaps beside the cooling pack, and diverted fresh air to the air box. We hung a craigslist bumper, and We also regeared from 4.10 to 3.55... the transmission we bought was one of those "new, all aftermarket parts" units... (against my recommendations) I rebuilt it at 3K, just outside of the warranty, because it was puking oil out every seam and seal.

Re: Well it's not a Chevy....

AC is on the list for my 72 as well. It definitely can be a PITA without it. How loud is this one? I need to put a timing light on mine and see how high it is. Mine is ultra combustion knock loud. The wife got tired of it and dosn't like to drive it. So I need to figure out why it's so loud, high timing I'm guessing, or stick a 12v in it.

I would say it sounds like a 1st gen Cummins. I think a lot of that has to do with the 12V cam and the VE pump. One thing we did do was re-pop the injectors from the VP spec to the VE spec. I want to say they were the 50HP injectors from Scheid. That would be 50 over stock VP, I guess. Once we re-popped the injectors, it quieted down substantially.

On the timing... We tried turning the timing back down 2 teeth to where it would be in stock form, but it wouldn't even run. So we turned it up one tooth advanced, and it was pure gutless. So we bumped it back up to 2 teeth. This is definitely the sweet spot.

I may try to get a video of it running so you can hear it.

Re: Well it's not a Chevy....

My injectors are 7.010 and set to VE pop pressure. Well supposed to be. I need to put a smaller turbo on it so I might rip mine out and have my brother check the pop pressure just in case. I'll try to get a vid of mine too.

Re: Well it's not a Chevy....

LMC tank failure: A popular upgrade on OBS ford trucks is the 38 gallon rear tank (replacing the 19 gallon original). We did this back when it was gas powered last year. Just after the warranty expired, it developed a serious leak. So, the owner drove it 650 miles, I brimmed a 5 gallon bucket with what was left, and then proceeded to apply a patch. While I was leak testing it, I found another random crack at the top of the tank. I noticed some rub spots that I didn't want to have to deal with later, so I applied some bed liner product. Anyone else had issues with LMC components?

By the way, this truck carries 57 gallons of fuel.

Re: Well it's not a Chevy....

I put a spectre tank in my old 95 that I sold to a friend. He just had to replace the tank because it was leaking around the fill neck tube where it goes into the tank. I'd almost bet LMC sells spetre tanks or one place makes these tanks and everyone else sells them. I wasn't to thrilled to hear the tank only lasted 4 years. The originals rot out and at least last 10+ years.

Nice repairs to the tank!
