trans identification?

I found this truck in a jy. It was pretty inaccessible and with all the rain lately and of course it's in the center of a Huge mud lake with other cars pushed up against its doors.
I did manage to stretch a arm in snapped the best pic I could of the knob I haven't noticed another like this knob.

Anyway it's a 5.7 2wd. 8 lug late 90's or early 2000's truck with what looks to be a quad cab(full rear seat) and a long bed,not a dually though.

Can anyone tell by the knob witch trans this is?
I inquired about it in the office 3 bills for the motor an trans pulled.i don't need the motor but allways can use another spare. I just want the trans.

After thought was I should took a pick of the whole truck.... u dum dum!

Re: trans identification?

Since it is a 3/4 ton, the trans is more than likely a NV4500. That is a steal for $300, assuming it is in usable condition. Even if the trans needs some work it is still worth $300 alone. You will want to keep the bellhousing and the hydraulic throwout bearing or slave cylinder as well as the line and maybe the clutch master. It all depends on what you plan on doing with it. By the looks of the shifter I would say it is more than likely a '91-'95.

Re: trans identification?

FYI, that interior pic is from a 94 and earlier truck, and the nv 4500 wast first used in 92. So it's a 92-94 nv 4500.

300 is a good price for a 2wd trans. Especially if it comes with an engine.

Re: trans identification?

I cant say i wouldve ever figured all that out with searches you guys are the greatest.
thank you.

I couldn't find another knob like this one in my search so I really wasn't sure if it's a nv4500 or some other trans.

I called the yard yesterday since I couldn't make it back up there during opening hours.
They are pulling it for me this week and giving me a call when it's all out.

I have been looking for a deal on 4x4 nv4500 to put in my 71 k20.
Seeing the prices of these trannys there is no way I'm passing up on a good 2 wheeler trans at that price.

Is there a way to install this in place of my current trans/transfer case?

I'm including pic's here cause I'm only assuming i have a sm465/205 combo in there now.
There is a chelsea pto on the t case too run the dumper pump.

I'm a newbie at 4x4's and a slow learner

Re: trans identification?

Since you've already got a transfer case I think all you'll need is the rear housing and tailshaft for a 4x4 nv4500..google it..there's tons of info out there on doing the conversion..or you might could find someone with a nv4500 4x4 that would swap with you..there's a lot of demand for these trans..I'm pretty sure you've got a muncie sm465 in your truck now..granny low for pulling stumps and 3 useable gears...only thing about putting the nv in your truck is you may have a lot of drive shaft work in your future and if the nv has the electric pulse speedo sender your speedometer on your truck won't work without a converter box such as a dakota digital and it may have a hyd clutch as well

Re: trans identification?

I'm not sure what all is involved in using a 2wd NV4500 in a 4wd application but I do know that it is cheaper to bolt up a round pattern NP205 to a 4x4 NV4500 versus a figure 8 pattern like you have. Look to Advance Adapters for the trans to transfer case adapter to make it work. All NV4500's have a hydraulic clutch. One way to convert to a mechanical clutch is purchasing the AA bellhousing for $375-400. In the 4x4 trucks the speedo is driven from the transfer case, so that is not an issue. Also there are many threads on the internet by people that have converted to a NV4500. One of the more popular is by member Crazy Larry here on this forum

Re: trans identification?

I spent some time reading about these trannys online.
wow there is lot of info out there on these.
And like usual, alot of it is conflicting.

Captain, I did read a little about the round pattern 205. Seems like the easiest way to go.

I just gotta get it here and decide which one it's gonna go in and go from there.

Sorry 6768 lover not at this time.
