69 c10 made2drag

A couple of years ago I picked up a 1970 C10 swb fleetside for $200. No motor or trans and pretty much pulled apart as my friend I bought it from was sure he was going to do a LS swap. He POR 15'd the floor and took everything out of the cab and did a great job but decided to move on to another project. Over the years, mainly last year, I've been doing a little here and there on my shoe string budget. With a super small budget and most of my project money going into drivers, this truck hasn't gotten very far. I did stumble on the fact that the vin# had a 0 in it, instead of a 9, making it a 70, not a 69. I've been calling it a 69, so that's why the build is listed as 69 and not 70.... It will be a 70, with a 71-72 grille, and I might still be calling it a 69! Just habit....LOL

Thanks to my buddy Brandon for basically giving me this truck!

Re: 69 c10 made2drag

brake booster/mc combo came off a junkyard 82 c10

Oh, and yes, I had to cut more of the 6 cyl crossmember out, on both sides, due to the manifolds I'm using. They were going to be right where the exhaust runs to the back.

Re: 69 c10 made2drag

Since the th400 frame bracket was going to be a nightmare to fab up and the manual crossmember being in the way, I decided to go the route of making one from a piece of round rod and 2 grade 8 bolts. I was going to just buy a Lokar shift linkage but didn't see paying $80 and I fabbed mine up for $4. I shifts thru all the gears and feels strong and reliable.

Re: 69 c10 made2drag

A decade ago someone cut the brake line to the rear. This and the fact that the 82 proportioning valve is in front of the motor has me running new brake line. 1/4" 25 foot roll came from Oreilly's for $23 bucks.... i'll use half for this truck and half for another.

Re: 69 c10 made2drag

Cleaned fuse connections, new fuses, new electrical tape and this stuff, that comes in a tube, to keep corrosion away. New headlight switch $11, new dimmer switch $8, key cylinder $10 and new ignition switch $16... all from Oreilly's... got the harness installed in the cab, and now I need to follow a diagram on here to see where all the wires go to on the eng side. Creeping along but steadily working on making progress.

Added a 73-87 c10 gas pedal with a 25 inch '77 stock cable. Still working on it but should be much better than the '70 stock gas pedal rod linkage type. I've heard 71/72 is the best fit but I couldn't find one on ebay. This one was $29 used, cable was $16 new.

Re: 69 c10 made2drag

In the last pic, the pedal is all the way up. Once I find a throttle cable bracket for engine side, I'll adjust the cable to be in the position my 86 is in normal position.

Re: 69 c10 made2drag

Here's the link I used for the swap. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...00#post1383300 I didn't do it exactly the same, due to pedal differences. It's funny I went searching for info on a swap, and I just realized I did the swap on my 56 a year ago by winging it... LOL

Re: 69 c10 made2drag

I just noticed those brown bucket seats are still in your garage, I thought you traded those off a few weeks back. Holler when you need help with this, apparently I was born to bust my knuckles on old trucks.

I brought them out to cruise in and showed Derrick. He says he wishes they didn't bolt into a k5 (hint, hint) and says he liked them but wasn't sure he wanted to spend the time to fab the seat brackets for a 63 c10 floor. I was hoping I was going to have a big chunk of time at the end of May to work non stop and knock it out, but it aint in the cards now. Good thing is I should have all my parts by then.

Re: 69 c10 made2drag

Looks like a big list but I will be nibbling on the list over time. Getting it driving is going to be pretty easy, then obviously working the bugs out later.

Having power brakes and a 350 with an automatic in a 67-72 has been on my wish list for at least 10 years. I'm hoping it turns out to be a great daily driver... I plan on cleaning the paint and knocking down the rust and spraying t-shirt sealer on it. I've heard it locks in the patina and the weathered look.

Re: 69 c10 made2drag

Took this stripped plug out, drained the pumpkin, cleaned it some, counted teeth and cross referenced stampings and found this 10 bolt 8.5 has a 2.73 gear ratio which is what I was hoping for! 41 on ring and 15 on pinion....It came out of an 85 c10 and with a 2.73 and a th400 I shouldn't be turning high rpm's at 60 mph even with it being non-overdrive. My 86 feels great with a 3.42 so im looking forward to even higher highway gears...LOL
