87 cab on 78 frame

I have a 78 chevy 4x4 stepside.. the cab is shot.. traded a 396 for a wrecked 87 with a very good cab and doors.. i need too know what is all involved in switching cabs. what to keep the 78 fenders / hood , i like this style better.

Re: 87 cab on 78 frame

I have 86 doors on my 74. Never did the front end swap but from what I read it's easier to put a 73-80 front end on a 81-87 cab than vice versa.

Re: 87 cab on 78 frame

All the doors will work its the front clip ull have issues with. Its the hood hinges and cowl/wipers that are different. The older cowl is on the hood that hide the wipers, the newer cab has the cowl attached with the wipers exposed. Heard it's a lot easier to put the later clip on the earlier cab than it is the other way.....but it can be done with some modification

Re: 87 cab on 78 frame

I used an '85 2wd cab on my '77 K10. I had all ready replaced the ft. fenders & doors(for a '77) it all goes together with no problem at all. You will have the 2-hood hinge "slots" in the cowl but that area is open anyway. Use the 4x4 cab mounts, if the replacement cab is 2wd you may have to change the trans tunnel or add a 1" body lift to clear the transfer-case.
