1977 Silverado Crew Cab.

This tread will be a build thread of sorts. Mostly a documentaitino of the tinkerings.

Last week i traded my 78 K25 for this 77 C20 crew cab.

Short term plans are to do a full round of "new used vehicle maintainacne" Stuff like full tune up, new fluids, etc. The truck has sat for nearly 10 years before i got it so it needs a good going over before it's really road worthy.

Long term plans are to convert it to 4x4, get it painted, and probably end up with a 6.0 or 8.1.

Here are some pics.

My old K25,

The Crew Cab.

Stay Tuned! Should be a fun project!

Nice truck to start with. Are you going to eliminate one of the cab lights and go back to 5 or eliminate all of them?

Re: 1977 Silverado Crew Cab.

I'll probably just replace the burnt out bulb in the one and leave them how they are.

Thanks!

Re: 1977 Silverado Crew Cab.

Nice grab! Seems to be the same original colors as my 75. Also you pretty much have the same plans as i do for a 4x4 and 6.0 or 8.1 swap. I will be subscribing.

Well call me crazy but the original colors are growing on me. This is what I think it would look like all painted up.

Re: 1977 Silverado Crew Cab.

Well so far i have done the following,

Got it registered/insured/legal.
Front calipers.
adjusted the rockers.
Hooked up the choke.
Fixed the seat belts.
Changed the door dome light switches.
Adjusted the power steering belt.
And pressure washed it to death.

Today i started a new project. I got the truck with 6" speakers cut into the kick panels. I had these new 6x9s I was going to put in the 78. So after some measuring I decided it looked like these could fit in the kick panels. And they do!

Before,

After,

And plenty of room for the e brake,

It did take some doing. And if the magnets were any bigger they would require a spacer. But in the end, they do fit! And sound decent enough for the old 80's deck thats in it now!

Re: 1977 Silverado Crew Cab.

Picked up a set of rear doors last night. Perfect condition but dirty for $25 for the pair and they were already off the truck! Friends in high places! The driver side one is the only one that really needs replaced. The passenger side one I just got so I could have matching factory tinted glass.

Indeed.

Pinsco63 (Scott) took the canopy off my hands today. I think it looks much better without it! Looks like a pickup now!

Started the disc brake swap today. Got it all done except I still need calipers and hoses.

Re: 1977 Silverado Crew Cab.

based on my experience with the 6.0 in a 3/4t pickup, you might as well just go for the 8.1 and have all the power you could need!

Re: 1977 Silverado Crew Cab.

They seem like they both will cost within a few hundred of each other and get within a couple mpg of each other, so why not get the big block? At least that's my current thinking. However, there is a 07 6.0 for $400 in a town where I am going in a couple weeks. I think I should stop by and check that out. If I can get it and it looks like a good deal, I'll probably pick it up.

i hear you there. i've got a 1948 gmc 1.5t truck that will be turned into a car hauler. i've decided if i can't find a good two-stroke detroit for it, i'll put in a 8.1l.

Re: 1977 Silverado Crew Cab.

So I have been talking to the wife and a plan is confirmed. After the 4th, 90% of extra money and time is going to getting the crew painted before Halloween! I think I can do it. Not having ever painted a truck before, It might be tough, but there really isn't much body work to be done. I'm thinking about putting a lean to off the side of the garage and having that be my paint area. It's about a 15'x25' space which would be better than trying to paint it in my garage. That's still slightly up in the air, but is likely to happen. Either way, the crew shall be lookin good before long!

The space,

Re: 1977 Silverado Crew Cab.

The brackets are something like $100 from diy4x.com and rotors are like $25 each, calipers are $20 each, pads are $20, hoses were $20 each etc. Probably about $300 all said and done?

Re: 1977 Silverado Crew Cab.

Bumper to bumper it does not look much longer than the newer truck next to it.
I like the stock color combo.
People say Chevy did not make 4x4 crew cabs before 1979 and they were only 1 tons.
I have personally seen 2 pre 1979 3/4 ton 4x4 crew cabs. Both were studio transportation vehicles and both had small blocks in them.
I think your 4x4 conversion is a great idea.
Those old trucks with white steel wheels and 11.00x16 mud and snow tires look really cool.

Agreed on all fronts. Tho I do believe that these crew cabs only came 4x4 in one tons and I believe they began offering them in 77.
