Re: 56 windshield and gasget

I could rattle off the whole process of replacing your windshield ,but there is some good you tube stuff and articles on the Internet that is useful.go there,I and anyone else would just be repeating that info. Also any glass shop worth their reputation should be able to give advice. Believe it or not there are still a fair number of newer vehicles that use the rope in glass install.

I am asking is it worth the money to go for a Steele or Percision gasget/seal at 3 times the money? they want over $100 bucks and I can get a Classic or LMC for under $40

Re: 56 windshield and gasget

Sorry my bad I missed the point of your post. I bought a new windshield gasket for my 54 in the early 90's(don't remember what I paid for it) and have put in 3 windshields since. I get windshields thru anyone of the local glass shops in town.they usually have to order one in but no problem getting them in. I like to go that way cause if there is a issue with it not fitting, it's on their dime not mine. As far as pricing, pay what you are comfortable with.

Re: 56 windshield and gasget

early 90s and today is a big difference
nobody around with the experience to install a gasket anymore
definitely diy unless you want to repaint the whole truck

Re: 56 windshield and gasget

Hmmm I disagree I took mine to a glass shop to do, 2 years ago . There are people out there who know how to do them, I can and do glass quite often. Only reason why I took it to a glass shop to do is because my insurance covers it. Yes one can do it themselves. Get the proper procedure and fly at it. It's not hard. As I mentioned earlier...Google it , I did just to see what would come up,and I would be repeating it all to put it down here.

Re: 56 windshield and gasget

FYI 2017 western star 3900 series trucks use a gasket and a lock strip. Late 90s early 2000 Volvo trucks use a gasket and it is a rope in. 1 piece glass less than 30 min to install. Same time for my 54 3100. There is more damage done removing a glue in glass plus more time involved prepping and installing. Our old school truck are pretty easy to do.
