Exciter wire

I installed a new alternator and I see the brown wire under my dash but don’t know where it goes. I was wondering if I can cut the wire and put a Y so the wire will go to my ignition switch and to where ever else it goes?

Thanks

Re: Exciter wire

Are you replacing an older externally regulated alternator with a new internally regulated? Or are you just repalcing with a factory replacement? I installed a newer alternator on my truck and there is a wire that runs from the light to the voltage regulator. I removed it from the regulator and ran it to the terminal on the back of my alternator. The light on the dash works and it charges like it should.

Re: Exciter wire

Yes I installed new alternator with internal regulator. I tried using the wire off of the external regulator and my truck dies after a while. I traced it to under my dash and then I lost it above the steering column. That’s why I was asking that question. I guess I’ll have to find where the other end goes or I’ll screw something up. Thanks for the info! I don’t have a light but I have a volt gauge.
