Stoplight Switch

Scenario: I push the brake pedal and a second later I hear a click and 1 brake light comes on.

I'm assuming the stoplight switch needs replaced. My question is...would this switch being bad cause only one brake light to come on? It seems odd that it would suddenly be a ground issue when the problem start right when I noticed the clicking of the switch.

Thoughts??
