Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Here's some new shots of the rear axle getting the final welding done on the spring perches and the shock & torque arm mounts prior to heading out for powder coat. Sorry no pics of the new brake lines & stuff yet.... Will get more pics once the axle comes back & gets re-installed.

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Talked with Beau tonight & we have decided on adding a removable, receiver mounted electric winch for the front end. They'll have to cut a hole for it in my bumper, but should be able to cover it with some kind of removable license plate frame. When it's not in place they are gonna make a mount for it inside my bed mounted toolbox. Another pus will be the quick connect wiring can also be used for jumper cables as needed so I won't even have to raise the hood!!!

I decided to go with a 2008 GMC 6.0L LY6 engine that had only 3,700 miles as well as a new GM NV4500 5-speed rather than the stock 454 big block & SM465 4-speed although both were in tip-top shape.
It's also getting an '05 rear 14-bolt axle with factory disc brakes - 4.10 gears & Eaton posi. The front axle is the stock Dana 60 that has been fully rebuilt & has Mile Marker stainless hubs. Both axles are getting Mag-Hytec covers & full powdercoat (as well as the frame).
I am going back with a Skyjacker 2.5" lift (front & rear replacement springs) over the older Pro Comp 3" currently on it, but getting a crossover steering set-up, Offroad Design shackles, custom built tie-rod assemblies & custom rear torque arms among other things!
It's gonna be my daily driver & one sweet ride!

I'm just looking at my Truckin' that I bought the other day and saw your rendering....looks good both ways with or without the box rack!

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Yeah, my original plan was for the headache rack & liked it a lot, but when we re-did it I had him leave it off so I could visualize it that way too. We are gonna go with one, just not gonna use the one from Highway Products or anyone else. Keven's gonna fabricate one from scratch that will blend much nicer with my truck. It's still have the same basic colors & appearance though for the most part.

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Well, a good news day for me! Looks like I may be getting the assistance of Eric "Eggie" Foust of Mindless Pinstriping (www.pinheadlounge.com/Eggie/)! You can see in my rendering where I need the red stripes around the black rally stripes on the hood & also the dual black wrap-around pin stripes.
Probably gonna tap his artistic side to come up with a cool design one the tailgate above the handle where the stripes come together. Also would like for him to do something on the lower painted area of my dash & then something cool on the "Vortec MAX" engine covers as well.
He's supposed to go up to the shop relatively soon & take a look over on my truck to see "what it says to him" & I can't wait to hear back!

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Here's a copy of the engine dyno results for my new Mast Motorsports LY6 6.0L engine. It made darn near 500HP & has a SWEET torque curve as well!!!! Should make for a VERY nice runner once installed! Mark will re-tune it a bit on a chassis dyno once we get to that point, so we'll see what it does then!

Yeah, it's gonna run out nicely I think! The motor redlines at 6,800rpm, but will never probably see north of 6,000rpm with me. I had them upgrade the cam & the valve springs from the base motor.

Here's a few additional shots of the disassembled rear axle just before heading over to be powder coated. The welds look GREAT - Keven's one hell of a good welder!

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

It's a big 'ol heavy truck, but I still hope to get something over 18 MPG out of it if I can keep my foot light... Will just have to see - am planning on driving it back from CA to AR when it's finished & that'll be a pretty good judge!

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Still waiting for the Ron Davis aluminum radiator to arrive at the shop.... Not sure why it's taking quite so long, but it's holding up the front clip mock-up which in turn holds up the inner fender powder coat & everything else! New motor is en route to the shop so at least that's a plus! We are also looking for an upgraded front caliper - hopefully aluminum w/ multiple pistons but we'll see.

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

News from the shop. Trevor just bought an 85 1-ton truck that he's gonna yank the pedal assembly out of to use on my truck since mine is set-up for mechanical linkage rather than a hydraulic set-up - so with the bell housing out of the 93 things are beginning to come along on that front. Maybe new pics tomorrow we'll see what happens!

Oh yeah, Eggie the pin striper made it up to the shop to look my truck over today! Hopefully he was able to come up with some ideas despite it not being fully assembled yet...

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Here's some info I think of some of you may enjoy! It's the 1st page of the vehicle history report that I got from GM Canada. It's pretty cool in that it shows exactly when & where it was built as well as what the MSRP was & even the dealer that sold it!!! Like I said before this truck never left the general area it was sold in.

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Ron Davis promises to have the radiator at the shop this week so they should be able to get it in & everything mocked up for the front-end! The motor should make it in also & the rear end should make it back from powder coat so this should be a good week coming up!!!

Thanks man! It's definitely a good start!!! Really hoping that it works out to get it into a magazine once it's all done as well - already talking to some people about it.

Re: 1977 Chevy K30 Crew Cab Build

Well, crappy end of the week for me.... Neither the new engine or the radiator has yet to make it to the shop! The rear axle housing is still at the powder coater as well - he is baking it in the oven several times to "cook out" all the oil from the metal before he shots it. They did however get the pedal assembly out of that '85 1-ton fit into my truck, although I have no pics to share of it yet... They sent those out to powder coat as well & then will install new bushings & stuff before final installation.
Still going back & forth on the header issue too - guess Trevor thought with the new bell housing that the headers I got would clear, but it's still an issue. Sent him the information on a company called Stainless Header Mfg. - they send out a kit that let's you mock up a custom set of full-length headers - then you send the kit back & they fab them for you. May not be the cheapest way to go, but at least they would fit perfectly!!!
The shop is also bringing back Del who they let go for a little while when the economy was so rough. He's SOOOOOOOOO much better and keeping me informed & getting me pics regularly!!! Plus he just kept everything flowing & organized quite a bit better!!!
Still tossing around the idea of running the STS remote mount turbo kit too, but not 100% sure if the investment is worth it. Biggest thing I don't like about it is having to have the air filter in the back, but they could fab up an enclosure in the bed somewhere & run the tubing up to it. We'll see I guess.
Hopefully will have pics for you all pretty soon - I'm doing what I can to get em.....
