Re: which da sander

I think a 6 inch orbital palm grip sander would be the best all round one. It is lighter and only need one hand to use. Something like this from Summit, but there are other brands that are good too.

Re: which da sander

I highly recommend something to the very top end of your affordably level.

There can be a big difference between a cheap one and an expensive one, one that would save you hours upon hours of work, and interestingly enough one that can save you a ton of sand paper too! A poor performing tool can wear you out and wear out sand paper with it doing nothing for you, believe me!

So, step it up to something like this.

http://www.eastwood.com/pf-3-32-in-offset-palm-sander-6-inhk-pad.html?mrkgcl=764&mrkgadid={_mrkgadid}&rkg_id=h-6caebd465572a93ebf2c414b8d004565_t-1513016564&product_id={product_id}&adpos={adposition}&creative={creative}&device={device}&matchtype= {matchtype}&network={network}&SRCCODE=PLA00020&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzqbo9MmC2AIVFdNkCh0fkwl3EAQYAiABEgL GgPD_BwE

Or what I have..

https://ballewsaw.com/dynabrade-ezq6...CABEgIVnPD_BwE

Edit: I can't search for the right one right now, but I think this one I Just posted is more for finish sanding with a finer smaller rotation. Get the more universal one if you are going to be using it for more aggressive sanding like striping or bondo work.

I HIGHLY recommend to not buy the cheapies!

Re: which da sander

Here are some options! https://www.grainger.com/category/pn...ts_optout=true

Honestly, this thing is basically a 6" "block" it is amazing how flat you can get bondo work with one of these only then needing to fine tune with the regular block.

Re: which da sander

I'm not really worried so much about price as quality....right now I'm at the epoxy primer stage and doing filler work at the moment...so thats what I'm mainly needing so I'm guessing I need the 3/16" orbit instead of 3/32" .?....my old one won't even run anymore and I have no idea what orbit it is...but I know its a very cheap sander

I'll try later but that link is giving me "your connection is not private" and I can't go there for some reason.

Re: which da sander

I prefer the 3/32 because I only use a DA for finer work. For bodywork or primer, I'd rather do it by hand or with an inline sander on the real coarse stuff. Hutchins makes the best DA out there, hands down. I really like the MAC tools DA though.

Also, hook and loop backing pads/paper are the only way to go IMO

I have to tell you, I use the orbital 6" and 8" "Hog" National Detroit 900 right up to just fine tuning with a block. I have actually did a lot of repairs right to finish with the 6" and it came out awesome.

Think of it a "block" as it truly is basically the same thing! It's not spinning remember, so if you had a 6" rubber block that gyrated around like that sander you could still "block" filler right?

It's amazing what you can do with those tools! I have a Hutchins 3804 orbital long board like this too. It's basically as I describe with your hand block gyrating, it's amazing.

Re: which da sander

I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself Brian. I'm not sure I'd tell a guy with very little experience doing bodywork to use a DA for that purpose right off the bat. It takes a lot of practice to be able to control a DA and do good, flat work with it. Yes, a block takes more time, but is a lot easier to control as a beginner. That's why I'd recommend, at least in this context, a DA only for things like refining sanding scratches in primer after blocking or sanding clear. I think a 3/32 DA is much better for this, and is suitable for anything else other than heavy stripping or bodywork jobs.
