Well, put a new Stant 180 thermostat in. We shall see if this works in cold temps. Which are coming very soon. I'll report back..

Okay the new thermostat didn't work. Took it for a ride this weekend. It was about 38 degrees out and the engine temp dropped down to its normal driving degree of around 150.. Ill have to try the card board thing.

I don't get it. If a thermostat were functioning properly then (apart from sub zero temps), it should run at the rated temp. The thing closes up, obstructs the flow, and the block heats up. Is your heater's water flow path bypassing the thermostat somehow? Have you played around with the hoses yet? Sorry pulling the Mr. Gasket didn't help, but it seems there is still a solution. Chevy made their trucks to operate properly in cold weather.

^^ That's why it depends on how the heater hoses are hooked up. If the heater hose is hooked to the radiator it will by pass the t-stat and might not warm up if your running a bigger rad and electric fans. The heater hose should run to radiator if it is an auto. This was done to warm up the transmission on cold days, as to cold of trans temp can also be bad.

Put a 195 t-stat in if you needing more heat why even miss around with the cooler t-stats. Chevy motors run a little better with a little more heat anyway. Did you try switching heater hoses around?

I didn't swap the hoses yet. I did two things to hopefully solve my issue. I got rid of my nice shiny chrome thermo housing and the reusable gasket I had on it. I went back to the stock thermo housing and used gasket maker. When I squeezed the bottom hose I could hear the thermostat jingling around. So hopefully the stocker can hold it down tighter I can still feel it move a tiny bit after the stock install when I put my finger in the thermohousing. Anyone thinking it could still be an issue? I'm letting the gasket maker dry over night.

If the thermostat isn't helping, something is wrong. Find the actual problem.

The water flow should go from the intake through the heater core to the water pump. It doesn't go through your radiator, it just keeps the water flowing through your motor until the thermostat opens.
Do you have your heater hose hooked to your radiator?

Think I figured it out. Cant tell you exactly what the issue was due to a chain of events that lead me to replace the water pump and reline the upper heater core hose to the water pump and already had did the stock thermo housing. This has at least helped with the heat problem. Now she produces heat and the temps stay near 180 degrees when I'm driving down the road. I'm just gonna guess it was the thermostat housing wasn't holding the thermostat down and coolant was bypassing. Thanks for the Help and Ideas guys..
