I don't think any vehicle is disqualified. I can see a 'burb lookin' pretty damn trick in Rat Rod fashion. That being said, I'm going to offer up a definition of "Rat Rod" that we can argue about...

To me, the Rat Rod is typified by the lack of high-dollar chrome and billet aluminum stuff. Often left in primer or various other states of unfinished paint, they are mechanically sound in the true "go fast first and make it pretty later" style. Contrary to what the owners of the $100k magazine queens (not that there's anything wrong with that

) might think, they are not unsafe death-traps (that would just be a junker).

Some people say that a true Rat Rod uses vintage speed parts and is limited to pre-60's cars. I say, "BAH!" Any vehicle can be a Rat Rod, but you'll score extra points for using period speed parts and accessories. You don't have to use old school stuff, but doing so is ultimately very cool.

Others claim that vehicles pass through the Rat Rod stage on the way to greatness. I disagree! As far as I'm concerned, a genuine Rat Rodder considers the style a destination and not a milestone. That's one of the great things about a Rat Rod! You can always make it pretty once you're done racing the hell out of it!

I want suede with 20 inch rallys in the back, 18s in the front.

Big Daddy was an old family friend. He took me to my first cruise night. Back then I didn't realize why he always had people swarmin around him. To me he was just Big Daddy. I used to get 5 cents a piece for puttin together his little catalogs

Howabout a 67-72 truck, SWB, wide or stepside, in primer, flamed, with a blower stickin' out of the hood, and a hole in the roof with a gnarly RF-type character holdin' on to a gearshift handle stickin' out the roof....big, smokin' tires on the back, and the front end lookin' like it's about 2-ft off the ground....like Ed Roth used to do 'em.

Yep, I know Ed's style very well. Hell, this might even provide the inspiration for me to break out my crayons and do something 100% custom just for us!

I have started collecting stuff for my truck and am trying to limit myself to the aftermarket stuff that would be available in the 67-72 year ranges. Some of this stuff can get pricey.

Thought about putting a web page up for people who would be interested.VINTAGE PERFORMANCE . Never finished uploading, just some of the inhale section. I've got loads on my computer just not time.

I think there's more of us that are into this look than I thought. I like the louver's, but I don't think that is what I am gonna do. Heck, I don't even have to get that cowl induction hood, now. It just wouldn't look right.

My plan is for my truck to be finished, but look like it isn't. By that, I mean the paint will be done over all the necessary bodywork, only it will look like primer, or close to it. John Deere implement black is one color that was mentioned to me, as having the "look". My truck will have all the body work needed to paint it any color, but I'm depending on the flames to be the focal point. There was a Rod & Custom magazine (recently) that had a '46 Ford Tudor, that was dark blue, but with the flames that I want. The owner did the car up, using nothing made after '58. Those flames are what I want.

Now, all I gotta do is get it scheduled into the body shop that I have chosen.

I think I'm gonna go with atleast a tunnel with 2 4's hangin out the hood.I'd like to go with a blower but don't know how streetable you could make it?Is it possible to build a reliable but bad ass blower motor?Just incase I drive it to tennesee one day?I've got photoshop but don't have a friggin clue as to how to use it,does anyone in the unofficial club have it to mock some trucks up for us?

I have an Honest Charley catalog, from '67. Sure was a lot different back then. I'm not gonna give up my Performer intake for an older Edelbrock or Offenhauser intake. As for wheels, I think steel rally's painted a contrasting color is my preference. I know they didn't exist in '67 (in a 6-hole pattern), but that's my choice.

....well of course i'm into the old skool look...something i was thinking of but cant afford is a hilborn fuel injection setup changed over to tpi..there are a few companys doing this now...bad as hell look with drivability.....

My immediate plans after getting the bodywork done is to drop the Panel..Air Ride? Put it in Black suede, paint the rims bright "Safety Blue" and roll it. A panel version of "The Voodoo Surf Wagon" for those of you that know that Burb. Lemme see if I have a pic....

Here's the outline for my truck.

Primer black with a straight body. Flat hood. 67 front clip. No chrome except for the bumpers, grill loops and round mirror heads. I'm going to put flames on the front but just an outline with red tape. Not painted in. Some striping on hood nose, around door handles and center of tailgate. Tank relocated to rear frame rails.

Stock style steel wheels but widened to 15X10 rear and 15X8 front. 235 60's in front and 28X12.5015's in back. Wheels blasted and painted red. No chrome rings or caps but will have chrome lug nuts and hopefully Cal Custom "Spiders" if I can find a set cheap enough.

Motor is a 383 but is dressed with old style hi-po parts. No billet or fancy stuff. I want to run a 6X2 intake eventually. Probably with the outboard carbs non functional and using the center 2. I have already swapped to PS, 5 lug and disc as this truck will be my daily driver.

The interior will be mostly stock but will be a floor shifter with an extended handle and skull knob. No tunes and more striping on the dash.

Any comments?

paintpyro,that pic is awesome,who makes those?But I don't guess there's anyway to hang that out the hood with no filter is there or does it have a filter inside?

Almost forgot about this, belongs to the brother of the guy that built my frame. He's replaced that engine with an 8:71 blown 528.

It's a '37 Chevy. The engine that;s in it now came out of a tractor (tractor pull type) It was an alky engine but he converted it back to gas, 950 horses.

That's kinda the look I'm going with on my '72 long bed.....
Semi-flat gray paint with painted bumpers to match, black steelies with 'dog-dish' centers.....no rings, black vinyl bench seat with rubber floor mat, 'Vette-style three-spoke steering wheel and a 2.5"- 4" drop. The only thing that will be colorful and shiney will be under the hood........the 500 Caddy!!

If this truck had the paint flattened and a wheel change I think it would have the right look. Does a RatRod need Fuzzy Dice? Or skulls? Maybe the dice should be coming out of the skulls mouth.
