Fuel Pump.

I have 1969 chevy c10 250 inline 6. First off I want to know which way the inlet hoses go, do they face the top or the bottom. I've seen a majority of the pumps go with the inlet hoses on the bottom, but mine was installed with the hoses on top.
My main questions are: should the hoses be on the top or bottom?
can something be missing or broken from the inside of the engine?

Re: Fuel Pump.

Chevy L6s invert the fuel pump [from the V8 perspective].
Fuel line feed-in and fuel line out to carb are on top. This is normal on L6 engines.
