Old iron: I just had to get a rag to wipe up all the damn drool on my desk after seeing your shop. That si a dream shop!!! I would just put a bed in the loft and call the shop my master bedroom

I could only wish to ever own a shop that size

what do you guys prefer and why, a standard truss roof or the open type. I guess it could depend on shop size. I am thinking 40x60. I have worked in many steel shops and just hate the interiors being open. They insulation gets filthy fast and looks bad. I was thinking roof trusses maybe one end vaulted for possible lift, with structural panels for walls. Heating and cooling would be easier with lower ceilings, and give you the ability to section it off for differnent levels of work, a dirty area, middle area for fab and paint prep, clean area for painting and interior. Also I have thought alot about heating, I have painted in shops with oil and propane or wood heat, puts too much crap in the air and you have to shut them off. What about just a/c with outside heatpump/propane gas pack using forced air?

I went with truss because of the price, I could get more bang for the buck. If you notice the last bay has no truss but two poles going up to the roof. This way I was able to build a loft 16 x 36. The loft is designed to support 26,000 lbs. Also with the truss I can use my hoist with 12 foot walls. If I had the rafter design I would have needed 14 foot walls which would have cost more.
Please excuse the mess it is getting close to garbage hauling day.

Dubie, it took me 20 years to save up for this shop. Just put a little away at a time some where you won't get at too easy.

Well right now I have a 22x26x8' 2 car detached garage and it's full. I think I need to hire someone to come over and organize it for me. I think no matter how much room I have it will still be too small.
I have a week off from work next week so I think I am going to put it to use and go out and clean it all up and get it organized. Wish me luck.
