Sending parts in for Zinc Plating.

I am sending some parts in to be zinc plated. I only have a few parts and the company will do just one part but tgey charge a $150 minimum. I have had a few things done in the past and it takes alot to go over the minimum.

If you have anything you would like plated post what you have.

To help cover the cost I'm asking $10 for a small flat rate box and $20 for a larger flat rate box. You can ship me the parts with a return label and as soon as they are done ill send them back to you. Turn around is usually about a week.

Id like to send in parts in 2-3 weeks.

Frank

Re: Sending parts in for Zinc Plating.

If I'm understanding correctly whatever I can fit into a large flat rate gets coated for 20?

Re: Sending parts in for Zinc Plating.

would something like this have to be disassembled for plating or can it be done as shown? What prep work is required before sending?

Thanks
Richard

Re: Sending parts in for Zinc Plating.

Funny you asked. I'm sending in the same latches. I was going to send them in whole and see how it goes. My plan is to strip the paint then remove the original zinc with muratic acid.

Re: Sending parts in for Zinc Plating.

Would bead blasting in the cabinet be acceptable for cleanup or would that make the too ruff still? I have zero experience with this.

Thanks

Re: Sending parts in for Zinc Plating.

Richard,

You want to do both.

First soak them in muriatic acid,

Then blast them. Be thorough in the center area with the spring.

Then they will be ready for zinc coating.

Surface preparation is actually the most critical part for any coating.'
Whether it is zinc coating in this case, or painting.

The reason for both is to remove the remnants of the old zinc coating and the rust.

Did this for my same side latches and they turned out great. They also now work like new.

I am a retired mechanical engineer who worked for John Deere, Mercury Marine and two boat companies - Tracker Boats and Four Winns. Been around painting, coatings for a very long time. Including working with some great painting and coating engineers, They get the credit for what I have learned. But I usually claim to know little. Humility.

Here is what I was thinking, I should be able to clean everything over the weekend. I may add a few more smaller items if I can find them.

Re: Sending parts in for Zinc Plating.

Dwayne,
I think these are great parts for the zinc plater.
Thanks for posting the picture of the parts.
Seeing your picture reminded me to add the hatch "lift struts" to my list for zinc plating.
But not ready to do all of my parts yet.

Re: Sending parts in for Zinc Plating.

DeadheadNM,,

They look great.
Did the plater cucvzuz plans to use do these parts for you?

On the bolts, are you concerned with them threading with the added plating thickness? When are you going to try installing them?

Thanks for the posting and pictures!!!

Re: Sending parts in for Zinc Plating.

What are the other parts in pic 2 besides the wiper nozzles?
The parts in the center in the center in pic 3?
I am having a brain fart remembering those parts. LOL

I used Kehr coating in Albuquerque. Not the easiest to deal with but were local at the time. The recoat doesn’t interfere at all with threading bolts. In fact nearly all my bolts for the blazer build were replated - some were nos and a few new.

I don’t have nozzles shown - I have a pic somewhere though. The second pic shows replated fuel tank straps bolts and the related plates.

Third pic middle row shows powder coated bezel things that secure the hatch hinge gaskets to the top as well as hinge to hatch for single wall tops.

Also, if it's not too late to get in the game, I would send some parts also.
