Powerglide vs. Turbo Hydro Steer Column Question

Hey Board,

My '69 c20 came with three-on-the-tree non-tilt. I've swapped in a "modern" 700r4 (from a 1992 C1500).

I'm looking to source a steering column from the salvage yard. As I'm sorting through salvage options on car-part.com, I'm presented with the option of sourcing auto/tilt columns from trucks running Powerglide trannys, or those running Turbo-Hydro trannys. The results are different, of course.

My question to the board is: "Does it matter that I choose a PG or TH column for my intended application?"

Thanks in advance for the feedback

Re: Powerglide vs. Turbo Hydro Steer Column Question

I was going through this same thing before I built my console. The power glide column has a shorter travel radius when trying to shift all the way down into low. Seemed the bottom of the column tube(under hood) had a smaller notch area... Not allowing the inner tube/shift arm to travel enough to catch all the ranges of the tranny. Would likely work... May not be able to shift into low. Shy of modding the opening in outer tube.

Re: Powerglide vs. Turbo Hydro Steer Column Question

With the exception of having to notch the bottom of the shifter tube the other difference that would cause a kickback for car/part. is the shifter indicator showing L D and the 3 speed showing L2D. I use car/part a lot and they are quirky about those little things but then they are just following the lead of the Hollender book people. Jim
