HEI Install

I recently bought my first ever Chevy truck - a basically stock 69 C10 stepper w/an inline 250 and 3 on the tree. I'm getting ready to swap the points dizzy for an HEI and the instructions say it needs a full 12V to the coil. Does my truck have an inline dropping resister to the stock dizzy and, if so, where is it?

you will need to run a new 12 guage wire from the fusebox where it says unfused ign . the wire that is connected to your coil currently is a resistor wire the whole length from bulkhead to coil . also disconnect yellow wire from starter to coil its there to supply full voltage to coil during engine cranking for the points

I removed the original resistor wire from the bulkhead on the firewall and replaced it with a normal length of wire to provide 12 volts to the HEI.

And or use the 12v resistor wire to trigger a 30amp cube relay, run a 12 gauge wire with inline fuse from the battery to the relay. I have this set up on both of my trucks. This minimizes the amp load going thru the trucks fuse box and ignition switch.

Read this thread to setup your HEI correctly: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=550048. Pay attention to the posts by HEI451, lots of good info. It's amazing how a properly tuned HEI will make your engine run well. Make sure your spark plugs are gapped to 0.045 with the HEI as well.

Followed the wiring link from previous post. Very easy to accomplish. Now just waiting on new "performance" data,...(i.e. MPG). She sure starts better!! Used a GM certified dizzy from AutoZone. $119 + tax. Works great so far.

X2. This method gets you the cleanest 12V possible.
