Rear end diagnostic help

I'm curious what I have going on here and am hoping you guys can point me in the right direction. My guess is that this is not the stock rear end for a 72 GMC and that someone has custom welded some brackets on that may not be centered. My suspicion is that the best way to fix it is to find a 72 GMC rear end and rebuild it as a replacement. But I'm curious to hear the thoughts of the community. Thanks!
