Fire in the carb

Have got my engine cranked a few times since heads & cam change.

Most of the time i have to spray starter fluid in holley double pumper to get it to fire .

Recently the carb catches on fire when attempting to crank > should i not use starter fluid ?

Also the front 2 primaries are not squirting gas > only the back secondaries squirt when throttle opens up past half way .

Have moved dist . Every way possible .

What can i do ?

Re: Fire in the carb

Distributors have a tendency to get turned 180 degrees. This can cause the symptoms you are seeing. Except for the primary accelerator pump not squirting. It becomes a chore so you can either just try to set it 180 from where it is now, or the better way, but requires more work is to:

Ensure #1 is at TDC with both valves closed and then making sure the pickup in distributor is pointing the the #1 spark plug wire.

Re: Fire in the carb

We have been through the set up a number of times, it's still the same info from your last few threads. I think it is time to get someone else to look at it cause you are overlooking something.

Carb has a problem unrelated to your timing and adjustments.

Starting fluid is not good on an engine cause it is very dry and has no lubricating properties.

By the way, when one backfires and flames up, keep spinning it, it sucks the flame down into the engine and causes it to go out plus it protects everything else from fire.

Again, I think it is time to get an extra set of eyes.

Re: Fire in the carb

How old is your Holley. If you backfired you may need to replace your power valve if your carb is not equipped for power valve blowout protection. If your bowl screws are flathead then it's one of these that needs an update

yea carb has backfired 3-4 times due to dumb me crossing 2 of the plug wires. Would the power valve being blown out have anything to do with primaries not squirting .

Yea bowl screws are flathead , but carb is one from aed ( very good carb techs ) take old hollleys & redo them . Good reputation !not that old .

Re: Fire in the carb

Fuel squirt when you stroke the throttle is controlled by the accelerator pump not the power valve. I have never known a backfire to damage an accelerator pump.

I didn't cry when my truck burned to the ground. I just swore a lot more than he did. Mine was more spectacular. At midnight! Towering inferno! 74 chevy swb ss too.
At least I still had a tailgate left over.
Lesson learned!
DON"T USE RUBBER FUEL LINES!!!!
