1999 C1500 Suburban "Catch" in front end
Guys,
I have had the entire front end of this suburban rebuilt with all Moog parts. Even before I did that, I have always had a "catch" in the front end. Something slips when the road curves and I turn the wheel slightly. It doesn't do it every time, but when it does it's kinda scary. For a split second I'm kinda nervous. Any ideas what this could be? It must be something I didn't replace, but you name it and it's been replaced on this front end. Shocks, upper/lower ball joints, tie rods, pittman arms. Something is slipping. Thanks. |

Check the seeing shaft and the rag joint. It could also be caused by play in the steering box. Might want to check the idler arm too.

Oh it has new idle arms as well. How do I determine too much play in gear box?

That sounds more like a steering position sensor going bad. Im not sure if the 99s have it but the 97s did and it was alarming when in a turn and it twitched. Vss i think it was called. I replaced several. Check the parts store to see if yours has it.

Boog is right on, the 99 burb has the steering sensor. The power steering system gives full power at low speeds but at higher speeds, it will cut the "power" steering back. It works with this sensor to decide how much to assist. The failing sensor gives a bad signal back to the system and it is giving you full assist in the curves. This is the jerk you feel.
You might also consider posting in the 88-98 truck section as you surburban shares the same powertrain, body parts as the 88-98 trucks. These trucks sometimes are called OBS (Old Body Style).
