Re: 1965 Ford Mustang

The next problem was the Kelsey Hayes Distribution block.

When I lost the brakes (car had sat for a couple weeks undriven) I figured the single bowl MS had given out. However, I didn't see any fluid on the firewall, inside or out, or on my floorboard. When removing it, there was some in the boot, but not a large amount. Weird.

I may have found my leak yesterday. The original Kelsey Hayes Proportioning valve appeared to be ok, but it was covered in old dirt/oil, etc. I cleaned it up, and when blowing out the line connections with an air hose produced a fair amount of fluid from the weep hole. Crap. So, being new to mustangs I discover this part is no longer available and these are the kinda prices people want for them, even ones that need rebuilt are crazy...

Re: 1965 Ford Mustang

So, maybe I can rebuild it? So I googled that. I read lots of posts of failed rebuilds using the ~$30 rebuild kit. Something about the bore becoming oblonged over the years, so most people recommended getting it resleeved ($80 for just a resleeve) plus time...

http://www.stangerssite.com/brakevalve.html

So, I really don't want to use something like that anymore.

Re: 1965 Ford Mustang

Not a single "local" parts store carries anything in stock for these cars except for a "universal" adjustable valve. Meh, no thanks. Not even rock auto or napa carry a part for it. I'm normally good at finding parts, but after quite a search and going through catalogs trying to come up with correct parts numbers that would be a direct fit for a factory disc brake car I came up with PV6070FD for $55. After I found the best price I couldn't hit buy fast enough. I found it first through NPD as PN 2B091-20AA, but they wanted $120 for it. It took me a little while to track down the actual PN for it (it does come with a bracket to mount it in the original spot).

So she sits for another week... Weather is starting to come around too...

Re: 1965 Ford Mustang

ah, the genuine article! A true proportioning valve or differential valve with the switch that will make your brake light come on if there is lack of brake fluid or air in the line. Does your '65 have a brake light switch on the dash? If so, and the brake light won't go out after you've bled the entire system, I know how to get it out 99% of the time. When the valve shifts, it shunts brake fluid to the "good" side, the side that has no air in the line~ a safety feature. If you don't have a brake light on the dash, and you go to bleed your brakes and you can't get fluid on either the front or the back, the valve would have shifted and needs to be brought back to equilibrium.
I installed the adjustable ssbc proportioning valve instead of the factory valve.

I had the same problem on my '57 chevy Bel-air booster install, and had to drill the hole like you did. Don't feel alone
dne'

The pic on the left shows the valve has shifted, one on the right is normal operation.

Re: 1965 Ford Mustang

No, 65/66's don't have brake warning lights. According to post #25 from the thread below (very knowledgeable Mustang guy) you can use the parking brake warning light for both (actually a 67/68 part), which is a great idea because I've left the parking brake on more than a time or two... wondering why the car feels sluggish...

Re: 1965 Ford Mustang

Got an answer from NPD why my pedal stuff didn't line up... my kit was missing a bracket. A bracket and new arm are on the way (the bigger hole in the arm won't work with the new bracket now ) Great customer service. If you ever have an issue with an NPD part contact:

Well, I didn't want to do it, but after mocking up the new MC and proportioning valve I'll be using my new eastwood flaring and bending tools to make new lines. Nothing remotely fit and I don't want lines all cobbled together in that crammed together space.

SO, another while I'm at it (I was going to do this anyway) I have to pull the rear axle for new springs, new seals (3rd member leaking bad, like I have to add gear oil every couple of months, hopefully it's just seals), and paint it. The rear springs are sagging bad. Going with stock rear springs and new shocks. Front is getting "Shelby" drop (really only drops nose about 1/2") with new roller perches, control arms, struts, and associated wear parts.

I HOPE to have this all done by April so I can test drive it a bit before the 50th anniversary show in charlotte.

Re: 1965 Ford Mustang

Ever rolled a back fender on a painted mustang? Holy hell what a nerve racking pain in the ass. I knew I would tear the hell out of the actual lip, there would be no helping that. There are two layers of metal that overlap and they're crazy thick. The eastwood roller could do NOTHING with that lip. I was able to work the front fender but not the rear. I had to take a small cresent wrench and grind most of the backside away to fit and roll in the fender. Once I had a good start, then the eastwood roller could be used. So this would obviously cause a lot of paint damage. It did. But only on the inside/backside of were the fender was rolled. This area will be scuffed, masked, and painted black.

You can see from the 1st and 3rd pics how much clearance I gained. Now my fatties in the back can stop scrubbing the back on hard bumps (new springs and shocks will help too).

Re: 1965 Ford Mustang

I think the PO put all the trim on the car before the clear had fully cured. There's scuff marks where the fender trim dug into the clear a bit. So, the trim just had to go back on the car. Now that the fenders are rolled the screw holes are gone. I also had to cut over 1/2" off the trim. There will still be one screw at the bottom front/back and I'll use 3M double sided automotive adhesive. I like the look with the trim. You never see it on cars with biggger wheels because of clearance (the trim is even wider than the fender lips). I was feeling brave so I cut up one of my brand new trim pieces.

I love the warm weather we're finally getting... makes me want to work on my junk again. And I apologize for the trash pictures, they're from my 4 year old phone, the canon has it's own weird rechargable battery and it was dead.

Re: 1965 Ford Mustang

I got all of the lines done except the one to the right front. Lots of fun.

I honestly can't give enough props to eastwoods flaring tool. Freakin' awesome. Ridiculously easy to make your flares. The follow is a pic of one of the first couple I made.

You also can't tell well from the pic because of the shadow, but I was dang near able to copy the factory line fairly easily with their bending tools as well.

Jack stands. I thought it was an awesome pic. Doing the new brakes. I threw the tires back on with some lugs because I'm always afraid the unibody will bend and fall or something... I knew I wouldn't be able to get back to the car until this weekend

Re: 1965 Ford Mustang

Here’s kind of an approximate stance that I’m shooting for. It’s getting a 565 BBC. If the nose drops too much when the engine is in I can get an axle with fewer drops to bring it back up. I started with this 4 inch drop tube but we’ll see. All kinds of room for any engine you’d ever want to try.

Re: 1965 Ford Mustang

So... lets talk about the good things that happened this weekend.

I got a 3rd fender rolled... only one to go! Wohoo!

For some reason, this one cracked paint like crazy. Even using a heat gun didn't help. It chipped almost all the way to the fender edge. No big deal, it's going to be covered anyway. But I can't leave it that way, so I sanded it down, feathered in the cracked edge, taped it off, epoxy primed, and sprayed black.

Re: 1965 Ford Mustang

The next day after thoroughly drying I cut up a brand new piece of fender trim. The fenders were only rolled slightly at the front and rear so I could still use the factory holes, from there I tapered in and cut it down to about 1/4".

I used double sided 3M trim adhesive on the back side of t he fender, trimmed it with a sharp razor blade, and peeled just the corner up. I lined up the screw holes on the botton, when I was happy where they were, I screwed in one end, peeled a few inches, worked it onto the fender, then peeled a few more inches... etc... until I made it to the other end and screwed it down.

Re: 1965 Ford Mustang

I've heard horror stories about how bad the export braces fit because of how the cars sag over the years. I test fit mine. One little tug on the PS and it slipped right over the bolts... awesome.

Re: 1965 Ford Mustang

That's where my good time ends. I had a nightmare with the brake/brake pedal.

I went back and forth with NPD, GREAT GREAT Guys, bent over backwards to help me out. Apparently my kit was supposed to have a relocation bracket. It wasn't in my box so NPD had the manufacturer send me a new one. It got sent to the wrong address and back to the MFG, so on friday NPD paid to have one over nighted to me from Florida. Probably cost 20 to 30 bucks. It came with instructions.

I installed it correctly. HUGE HUGE HUGE oversight... THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH DOES NOT WORK WITH THIS KIT!!!

I hooked everything up and had no brake lights... wtf? So I looked at how it works...

When you push in on the brake pedal, the flat part of the pedal rotates on the pin on the brake pedal which in turn moves the switch and causes it to kick the brake lights on...

1st pic would be with pedal at rest (shown apart to show the flat end on the rod.)
2nd pic is what it looks like (exaggerated) when pedal is pushed in. The pushed on the metal in the switch which pushes against a spring, which activates the brake lights. It's a switch that's "always on" so when the circuit is broken it turns off which turns the lights on.
